The Morris Eagles fought valiantly in one of the highest-scoring games of their 2025 season, but ultimately came up just short in a 49-46 shootout loss against the Atoka Wampus Cats on Thursday night.
Despite totaling 428 yards of offense and scoring in every quarter, Morris (0-5) couldn’t hold off Atoka (1-4), who matched their offensive firepower and sealed the win with a final defensive stop in the closing minutes of the game.
— Back & Forth Battle Under the Lights
From the opening kickoff, it was clear this would be an offensive showdown. Morris struck first with a 3-yard touchdown run by Chase Bumgarner, capping off a steady opening drive. However, a missed two-point conversion left the score at 6-0.
Atoka responded quickly with a 28-yard touchdown pass and would continue their air attack into the second quarter, adding two more touchdown passes of 34 and 41 yards.
Trailing 21-12 late in the second quarter, Morris quarterback Logan Martin connected with Hunter Hodges on a 31-yard touchdown strike to bring the Eagles within striking distance heading into halftime, 21-18.
— Momentum swings in the second half
The third quarter saw both teams continue to trade punches. Atoka extended their lead to 28-18, but Morris answered with a 25-yard touchdown pass followed by a successful two-point conversion to tie it at 28-28.
Atoka surged ahead once more with a 47-yard rushing touchdown, but the Eagles clawed back again as Martin punched in a 2-yard rushing score, closing the gap to 35-32.
In the fourth quarter, Atoka widened the lead again, this time with a 30-yard touchdown run. Morris would not go quietly, answering with a 1-yard run but again failing on a two-point attempt. Down 49-38 with time ticking away, the Eagles engineered one final scoring drive, capped off by a 5-yard touchdown run and two-point conversion to cut it to 49-46.
But that would be the final score, as Atoka was able to run out the clock and hand the Eagles their fifth straight loss in what was otherwise a gutsy performance from the young Morris squad.
