Eagles fall to Atoka in shootout
By Patrick Ford Editor

The Morris Eagles fought valiantly in one of the highest-scoring games of their 2025 season, but ultimately came up just short in a 49-46 shootout loss against the Atoka Wampus Cats on Thursday night.

Despite totaling 428 yards of offense and scoring in every quarter, Morris (0-5) couldn’t hold off Atoka (1-4), who matched their offensive firepower and sealed the win with a final defensive stop in the closing minutes of the game.

— Back & Forth Battle Under the Lights

From the opening kickoff, it was clear this would be an offensive showdown. Morris struck first with a 3-yard touchdown run by Chase Bumgarner, capping off a steady opening drive. However, a missed two-point conversion left the score at 6-0.

Atoka responded quickly with a 28-yard touchdown pass and would continue their air attack into the second quarter, adding two more touchdown passes of 34 and 41 yards.

Trailing 21-12 late in the second quarter, Morris quarterback Logan Martin connected with Hunter Hodges on a 31-yard touchdown strike to bring the Eagles within striking distance heading into halftime, 21-18.

— Momentum swings in the second half

The third quarter saw both teams continue to trade punches. Atoka extended their lead to 28-18, but Morris answered with a 25-yard touchdown pass followed by a successful two-point conversion to tie it at 28-28.

Atoka surged ahead once more with a 47-yard rushing touchdown, but the Eagles clawed back again as Martin punched in a 2-yard rushing score, closing the gap to 35-32.

In the fourth quarter, Atoka widened the lead again, this time with a 30-yard touchdown run. Morris would not go quietly, answering with a 1-yard run but again failing on a two-point attempt. Down 49-38 with time ticking away, the Eagles engineered one final scoring drive, capped off by a 5-yard touchdown run and two-point conversion to cut it to 49-46.

But that would be the final score, as Atoka was able to run out the clock and hand the Eagles their fifth straight loss in what was otherwise a gutsy performance from the young Morris squad.

— Morris Standout Performances

• QB #6 Logan Martin turned in a strong night despite three interceptions, completing 15 of 30 passes for 232 yards and 2 touchdowns. He also added 31 rushing yards and a touchdown on the ground.

• RB #2 Chase Bumgarner was a workhorse, rushing 20 times for 102 yards and a touchdown, while also handling kickoff and punting duties. Bumgarner tallied 183 kickoff yards and a 35-yard punt.

• WR #3 Hunter Hodges led all Morris receivers with 7 catches for 91 yards and a touchdown, also adding 33 kickoff return yards and 2 punt returns.

• WR #9 E. Edwards added 66 receiving yards, while K. Richardson (57 yds) and E. Smith (31 yds) contributed with clutch catches throughout the game.

— Defensive Highlights

Though the game was dominated by offense, several Morris defenders stood out:

• #58 I. Taylor led the defense with 4 solo tackles, 3 assists, and 2 sacks.

• #4 L. Walters and #26 E. Smith each contributed 4 total tackles, while Smith also grabbed an interception and a fumble recovery.

• #56 D. Andrews added a sack to go along with 2 tackles and an assist.

• C. Bumgarner also grabbed an interception on defense, continuing his all-around impact.

— Team Stats Category Morris Atoka Total Yards 428 374 Passing Yards 263 97 Rushing Yards 165 277 First Downs 23 13 Turnovers 3 2 Penalties 10/86 4/15 Despite out-gaining Atoka in total yardage, first downs, and third-down efficiency, penalties and turnovers ultimately cost Morris at critical moments.

— Looking Ahead

Though the loss stings, the Eagles showed resilience, offensive balance, and playmaking ability. With standout players like Martin, Bumgarner, Hodges and a tough defensive line, Morris is poised to build on this performance as they head into the next stretch of district games.

Head Coach Robert “Bobo” Daniels will likely focus on limiting turnovers and reducing penalties as the team searches for its first win of the season.

The Eagles return home next Friday night looking to regroup and refocus in front of their home crowd, hoping to turn close calls into victories.

Stay tuned for full season coverage of Morris Eagles football in upcoming editions of the Okmulgee Times and Henryetta Free-Lance.
