Beggs JV takes early lead, holds off Henryetta before halftime call
By TIFFANY BELL SPECIAL TO THE TIMES

The Beggs Junior Varsity football team secured a hard-fought 21-12 victory over Henryetta JV last Monday at Beggs, in a game that ended prematurely at halftime due to multiple injuries and cramping issues among Henryetta players.

Beggs took an early advantage thanks to a pivotal special teams play. Punter Ethan Tucker launched a booming 60-yard punt that pinned Henryetta deep inside its own 1-yard line. Shortly after, Beggs linebacker Easton Bradley forced a fumble that was recovered by teammate Jayson Williams, setting up the Demons’ first score of the day. Quarterback Baker Copeland, a standout sophomore, connected on a 20-yard touchdown strike to fellow sophomore Sterling Jordan to put Beggs on the board.

Henryetta responded quickly with a big play of their own, as quarterback Tyson Wieland found Blazin Davis for a 62-yard touchdown, narrowing the Demons’ lead to 7-6.

Beggs answered back in the early second quarter when Copeland found another sophomore receiver, Josiah Hughes, on a 31-yard touchdown pass to extend the lead to 14-6. On the next Henryetta drive, defensive end Jayston Tennyson disrupted a tunnel screen by forcing a fumble, recovered by Randall Winford. Beggs capitalized immediately, with Copeland hitting Jordan again, this time on a 37-yard scoring pass.

Henryetta managed one final touchdown before the game was called, as Gavin Chamberlain connected with Wieland on a 10-yard pass in the front of the end zone, bringing the score to 21-12.

Statistically, Baker Copeland led the offense, completing 8 of 13 passes for 144 yards and three touchdowns, while rushing for 52 yards on four carries. Sterling Jordan caught four passes for 75 yards and two scores, and Josiah Hughes added 67 yards and a touchdown on three receptions.

Beggs JV was back in action this Monday, Oct. 6, hosting Holdenville in what promised to be another exciting home game.
