Knights outlast Eagles, 35-26, in high-octane Walker Cup showdown

The stands were packed, the lights were bright, and the intensity was palpable as the Henryetta Knights and Morris Eagles clashed Friday night in the 4th Annual Walker Cup. In a thrilling, back-and-forth battle, it was Henryetta who emerged victorious, defeating Morris 35-26 in a game filled with explosive plays, big-time performances and deep-rooted rivalry energy.

The Knights improved to 3-1 on the season and 1-0 in district play with the hard-fought win over a resilient Morris squad that refused to go quietly.

Quarterback Nakona Johnson and wide receiver Nathan Nail were key difference-makers for Henryetta, combining for two touchdowns through the air. Johnson passed for 175 yards on 9-of-18 passing with two touchdowns, adding 63 yards on the ground and one rushing score.

— Walker Cup – A Rivalry of Legacy

The Walker Cup, established in honor of the late Coach Walker, continues to represent a tradition of excellence, sportsmanship and competition between the two Okmulgee County schools. Friday night’s contest was one of the most competitive in the trophy’s short history.

Morris responded with a 6-yard touchdown run by Chase Bumgarner. The game exploded in the second quarter as Johnson found Nathan Nail for a 51-yard score, and later added a 10-yard rushing touchdown. Morris countered with a 21-yard TD run by Landon Martin and a successful 2-point conversion from Martin to Hagan Hodges.

The third quarter featured a 54-yard touchdown bomb from Johnson to Will Perez and a game-breaking 76-yard kickoff return by Nail. Bumgarner added another short rushing touchdown for Morris, but failed conversions haunted the Eagles.

In the fourth, Morris made a final push with a 44-yard touchdown pass from Bumgarner to Trent Whitaker, but could not recover the deficit as Henryetta held on to secure the Walker Cup.

• Bumgarner: 3 punts, 71 yards (23.7 avg); 5 kickoffs, 172 yards – This win added a crucial momentum boost for the Knights as they continue district play. With multiple offensive weapons and a defense that’s showing steady improvement, Henryetta is shaping up to be a serious contender in Class 2A-II this season.

Henryetta will return home for their next district contest, while Morris will regroup and aim to bounce back in their upcoming matchup.
