Dunbar Class of ‘65 gears up for 60th reunion

The pride of the Tigers roars once again as the Dunbar High School Class of 1965 prepares to celebrate its 60th reunion this weekend. Alumni and community members are invited to take part in events spanning three days, all centered at the Dunbar Alumni Center-formerly Banneker Elementary School-located at 420 E. 2nd Street in Okmulgee.

This milestone event, themed “Let’s Start Where It All Began,” promises to rekindle old friendships, honor cherished memories, and celebrate the legacy of Dunbar High School, which served the African American community in Okmulgee during segregation and left a profound mark on the city’s cultural and educational history.

— Weekend Schedule of Events Friday – Classmates-Only Meet & Greet The celebration begins with a private gathering for the Class of 1965 alumni on Friday evening. This special event allows classmates to reconnect, share stories and reflect on their high school experiences in an intimate setting.

Saturday – ‘Walk Down Memory Lane’ The centerpiece of the reunion is the “Walk Down Memory Lane” celebration, open to the entire community. The event takes place from 6-10 p.m. at the Dunbar Alumni Center.

Attendees can expect an evening filled with music, memories and camaraderie. The reunion committee invites former students, teachers, families and friends to attend, donate, and share in the Dunbar legacy.

• Suggested donation: $10

• All proceeds will go toward supporting Dunbar Alumni projects and community outreach.

This event also serves as a powerful reminder of the resilience and spirit of the Dunbar community, with many returning guests traveling from across the country to attend.

Sunday – Church Service with Pastor Jesse Frazier The weekend will conclude with a spirit-filled worship service at the Dunbar Alumni Center beginning at 11 a.m., led by Pastor Jesse Frazier. This Sunday service offers a moment for reflection, praise and gratitude for the journey of the Class of 1965 and the generations of Tigers who followed.

— Preserving a Legacy

The 60th reunion is more than just a celebration – it’s a tribute to a powerful chapter in Okmulgee’s history. Dunbar High School was once the cornerstone of education for Black students during segregation, and while the school closed following integration, its legacy continues to thrive through its proud alumni.

The reunion committee encourages the public to participate, especially in Saturday night’s community-wide “Walk Down Memory Lane.” Whether you’re a graduate, a friend or a supporter of Dunbar’s mission and history, this weekend is a chance to honor the past and build momentum for the future.

This reunion marks not just 60 years since graduation, but a celebration of community, culture and connection. As the flyer says: “You are invited.” Let the echoes of the Tigers’ pride ring loudly once more in Okmulgee.
