Tulsa came out swinging in its American Athletic Conference opener, showing heart, hustle and hunger in front of the home crowd at H.A. Chapman Stadium. The Golden Hurricane stormed to a 14-0 lead behind a fired-up defense and a fearless debut from backup quarterback Baylor Hayes. For a moment, it looked like TU was ready to make a statement.

But after halftime, the tide turned. Navy’s methodical offense wore down Tulsa’s defense, and the Hurricane couldn’t recover – falling 42-23 in a game that started with promise but ended in frustration.

“We showed flashes of who we are,” said TU head coach Tre Lamb. “But we’ve got to sustain it. That’s the next step for this team.”

Tulsa’s opening drive wasn’t even needed – its defense took care of business. Sophomore Elijah Green made an immediate impact with two first-quarter interceptions, including a highlight-reel grab near the sideline. Devin Robinson added a fumble recovery, and TU’s defense forced turnovers on Navy’s first three possessions.

On offense, Hayes stepped in for the injured Kirk Francis and delivered a gritty performance. His 6-yard touch- down run capped a confident drive, and Dominic Richardson powered in a fourth-down score to give TU a 14-0 lead.

“We dictated the pace early,” Lamb said. “That’s Tulsa football – fast, physical, and fearless.”

— Missed Chances, Momentum Lost Tulsa had a chance to extend its lead when Richardson broke loose for what looked like a touchdown, but a holding penalty brought it back. On the next play, Hayes was hit and fumbled, and Navy capitalized to tie the game.

From there, TU struggled to regain control. The Hurricane was outscored 35-3 over the final two and a half quarters, with the game slipping away during the crucial “middle eight” – the last four minutes of the second quarter and the first four of the third.

“That stretch changed everything,” Lamb said. “We’ve got to be sharper in those moments.”

— Growing Pains for TU’s Young QB Hayes showed flashes of brilliance but also the growing pains of a firsttime starter. He finished 22-of-37 for 189 yards, with one touchdown and one interception. His mobility and toughness were evident, but consistency remains a work in progress.

“I’ve got to be better,” Hayes said. “This team deserves it. I’ll learn from this.”

Lamb remains confident in his quarterback’s upside. “He’s got the tools,” Lamb said. “He’s tough, he’s smart, and he’s not afraid. That’s the kind of guy we build around.”

Despite the loss, Tulsa’s foundation is clear: a young, hungry team with playmakers on both sides of the ball. The effort is there. Now it’s about execution, discipline and finishing games. “We’re building something here,” Lamb said. “We’re not there yet, but we will be.”
