Talent shines for Eagles in Homecoming loss

While the final score didn’t land in the Eagles’ favor on Homecoming night, Morris showed flashes of young talent, developing chemistry and a never- quit attitude as they continue to build for a strong season ahead. The Eagles fell 33-7 to the Liberty Tigers, but several underclassmen delivered breakout performances that point toward a bright future for the black and silver.

Now 0-2, Morris will take that growing momentum into this Friday’s road test against the Haskell Haymakers.

— Young Guns Making Their Mark

Leading the way for Morris was quarterback Landon Martin, who completed 9-of-20 passes for 98 yards and added 42 rushing yards on the ground. Despite facing a swarming Liberty defense that forced five interceptions, Martin remained poised and aggressive – including a highlight-reel 35-yard touchdown strike to Trent Whitaker in the first quarter that electrified the Homecoming crowd.

Elijah Edwards added a boost to the passing game, stepping in to complete a perfect 35-yard pass and hauling in three receptions for 55 yards. Edwards continues to impress in his debut varsity season, showing excellent route-running and reliable hands under pressure.

Running back Grant Clay added 30 yards on the ground and showed promise as a dual threat out of the backfield, while wideout Gage Ausbrooks pulled in two catches and contributed heavily on defense with two interceptions – a team-high.

— Defense Packed with Playmakers

The Morris defense stood strong against a pass-heavy Liberty offense, with multiple un- derclassmen making noise in the trenches and secondary.

Linebacker Elias Smith delivered a standout performance with one solo tackle, two assists, one sack and three tackles for loss. He was everywhere the Tigers didn’t want him to be.

Chase Bumgarner, known for his versatility as both a quarterback and linebacker, finished with four tackles, one assist and two tackles for loss. His intensity and nose for the ball brought energy to the defense all night long.

Jaxon Rowland and Jaret West each added key sacks, while Dayton Andrews muscled his way through for another. Isaiah Taylor and Dre’ Lewis also contributed to the defensive effort with a sack each, proving the Eagles have depth across all grades.

Rowen Ramirez added to the stat sheet with a pair of tackles, and Trent Whitaker made plays on both sides of the ball.

— Big Picture: Progress Over Perfection

While Liberty capitalized on turnovers and defensive scores – including three pick-sixes – the Eagles out-gained them in total yardage (213 to 179) and held the Tigers to -10 rushing yards. Statistically, the teams were closer than the scoreboard suggested. It was the big defensive plays by Liberty that made the difference.

— Friday Night Road Test at Haskell

The Eagles now turn their focus toward a Friday night road showdown with the Haskell Haymakers, where the team looks to take the next step forward in converting progress into points.

Expect continued growth from Morris’ rising stars, who are gaining valuable reps and confidence each week. If the flashes of brilliance from Martin, Edwards, Smith, Clay and Ausbrooks are any indication, Morris fans have a lot to look forward to as the season continues.
