Eastside Baptist youth called to ‘level up’ spiritually
By DAWN CARTER REPORTER

The sanctuary at Eastside Baptist Church was alive with energy on Sunday, Aug. 31, as students led the congregation in worship for the annual Back to School program. This year’s theme, “Level Up,” resonated throughout the afternoon, encouraging young people to embrace growth in their spiritual walk alongside the new school year.

Guest speaker Minister Justin Skillens of Paradise Baptist Church in Tulsa, where Sam Holmes, Jr. serves as pastor, brought a message titled “Rules for Next Level Living.” Drawing from 2 Peter 3:17-18, he outlined three keys for students and adults alike: guard what God has given you, grow in what He has given you, and give Him the glory.

— Rules for Next Level Living

Skillens connected everyday student experiences – like moving from one grade to the next, or facing tougher teachers – with spiritual challenges. Just as older siblings or classmates can warn you about what’s ahead in school, he said, believers must listen to the Holy Spirit and mentors who prepare them for spiritual obstacles.

“Don’t let the distractions disrupt your diligent pursuit of reaching the next level,” Skillens urged. “Be on guard. Protect what God has already given you – your faith, your knowledge of Jesus and your awareness that you are beloved.”

He reminded the youth that even when lessons are difficult – both in algebra and in life – growth comes by “reading the manual,” the Word of God. “If you only go off what you already know, you won’t tap into the full power of Jesus Christ within you,” he said.

Skillens concluded with a call to glorify God in every success: “When others notice your Next Level Living, don’t take the credit. Give Him all the glory – both now and forever.”

— Youth Reflections on Leveling Up

After the service, several students shared what the theme meant to them. Trey explained it as “growing spiritually,” while another student, Marcus, described it as “getting your relationship with God better.” Tavian said his focus was simply “doing what’s right,” even when it isn’t easy.

Chris, another participant, chose a word that carried weight – ascend. For him, leveling up meant “going higher,” like taking another step upward.

When asked what their desires were in following Christ, one youth said, “to learn His true words,” while another emphasized the importance of hearing from God directly. Others shared that in a world full of distractions, their goal was to stay focused and get closer to Him.

— A Community of Support

Pastor Jeffrey, the Eastside Baptist Church family and visiting church members joined in affirming the youth who organized, led, and participated in the program. The service was not just about marking a new school year – it was a reminder that the spiritual journey also requires commitment, vigilance and growth.

As Skillens summed up: “Each time you progress to the next level, remember Him. Guard what He’s given you. Grow what He’s given you. And give Him the glory.”
