Wilson Tigers open season Thursday
By Patrick Ford Editor

The Wilson Tigers kick off their 2025 football season on Thursday, Aug. 28, at Crossover Prep Academy with a 7 p.m. kickoff. Entering the season under the steady leadership of Coach Matt LeGrand, now in his sixth year at Wilson and fifth as head coach, the Tigers aim to build on a standout 2024 campaign.

Assisting LeGrand this year are Garrett Sands and Willie Huffman III, providing additional support to the football program.

— Building on a Statement Season The Tigers’ 2024 campaign left a strong impression across Class C football. Wilson opened the season with decisive victories over Strother (42-24), Savanna (52-12) and Watts (54-0). The defense posted shutouts against Webbers Falls, Arkoma, Gans and Copan, and the team demonstrated resilience in the postseason, defeating Davenport (52-7) and surviving a high-scoring game against Okeene (58-50) before falling to Weleetka (46-26).

Wilson competes in a district that includes Webbers Falls, Arkoma, Gans, Copan and Wesleyan Christian. With multiple returning starters and promising underclassmen, the Tigers are seen as strong contenders for the top spot. Their Oct. 10 clash at Webbers Falls is already being highlighted as a key district matchup with potential playoff implications.

Coach LeGrand admitted that his numbers are down, especially with the loss of several key seniors to graduation. However, he has high hopes from the new group and returning players that will be instrumental in a successful season.

The home opener for the Tigers will be Sept. 5. — Roster Spotlight # Name Grade 1 Keshon Shelburn Sr.
