Annual Oklahoma Sales Tax Holiday returns

Annual Oklahoma Sales Tax Holiday returns

Shoppers across Okmulgee County and throughout the state will soon get a much-needed break on backto- school expenses, as Oklahoma’s annual Sales Tax Holiday kicks off Friday, Aug. 1, and runs through Sunday, Aug. 3. This tax-free weekend is a prime opportunity for families to save money while supporting local retailers.

According to the Oklahoma Tax Commission, the Sales Tax Holiday is a designated period during which retail sales taxes are not collectible or payable on specific categories of purchasesnamely, certain types of clothing and footwear.

During the holiday, consumers can purchase individual items of clothing or footwear that are priced under $100 without paying any state, city, county or municipal sales taxes. Qualifying items include most standard apparel and shoes intended for everyday wear.

However, shoppers should be aware that not everything in the clothing department is exempt. The sales tax waiver does not apply to accessories such as jewelry, handbags or watches, nor does it apply to specialized clothing or footwear designed primarily for athletic or protective use-items like cleats, football pads, or steeltoed boots. Rentals of clothing or footwear are also not included in the exemption.

— Where Can You Shop?

The tax-free benefit applies to purchases made in person at retail locations, by phone through catalogs, and even online-provided the transactions meet the qualifications during the eligible time period.

— Who Benefits?

The Oklahoma Sales Tax Holiday provides significant savings for families, especially those preparing for the start of the school year. It also serves as an economic boost to local businesses, encouraging residents to shop locally rather than seeking deals outside the county or state. It’s a win-win for families and local merchants alike.

Participation in the Sales Tax Holiday is not optional-retailers across Oklahoma are required by law to comply with the tax exemption guidelines. That means qualifying purchases under the $100 price cap cannot be charged any sales tax, no matter the store or location.

For full details and frequently asked questions, shoppers and business owners are encouraged to visit the Oklahoma Tax Commission’s Help Center at: https:// oklahoma.gov/tax/helpcenter/ businesses.html#BUSSALESUSE.

— Helpful Shopping Tips

• Plan ahead: Make a list of needed clothing and footwear for the school year.

• Check prices: Only individual items priced under $100 are exempt-not the total purchase.

• Shop early: Stores may be crowded, and inventory may be limited.

• Keep receipts: For clarification or proof in case of issues with exemptions.

• Ask questions: If unsure, ask store associates whether an item qualifies.

As the Aug. 1-3 weekend approaches, local businesses are gearing up for a busy shopping period. Whether you’re restocking school wardrobes or simply refreshing your closet, this tax holiday offers an ideal time to buy-and to support your neighborhood retailers while doing it.

Don’t miss your chance to save during Oklahoma’s annual Sales Tax Holiday. Mark your calendars and shop smart.
