Myrna Joy Fielder, 85, was born on August 25, 1939, in Seminole to Lloyd and Jewell Brown. She went to be with the Lord on July 18, 2025, from her home in Okmulgee. Myrna was an active member of Okmulgee First Baptist Church.
After graduating from Seminole High School, Myrna attended Oklahoma Baptist University in Shawnee. As a freshman, she met a young pastoral student named Jerry Holman Fielder. They married on December 21, 1958, and celebrated almost 65 wonderful years together before Jerry’s passing in 2023. Known by many friends and family as Pawpaw and Grammy, their marriage was truly an example of faith and love with Christ as the center.
As a wife and mother of three, Myrna decided to continue her education and earned a bachelor’s degree from Northeastern State University in Tahlequah, and went on to earn her master’s degree from Central State University (now UCO) in Edmond. She was a much loved and well-respected teacher in the public school system, retiring in 1999 from Westmoore High School in Moore as a counselor.
Condensing Myrna’s life story to a few paragraphs is an impossible task. First and foremost, she was a genuine Christian who strived daily and for her entire life to seek God’s will. Jerry was called to preach in numerous places throughout Oklahoma and Illinois, and although Myrna loved her role as the Preacher’s wife, she was equally passionate to serve the church and the Lord with her own ministries. Over their career and beyond, Myrna could be found in the church kitchen cooking meals, the nursery caring for babies, teaching children and youth, going to Falls Creek, leading bible studies and singing in the choir. Myrna loved to teach Sunday School and was a legitimate scholar of the texts in her own right and was an extraordinary teacher of the Word. Myrna loved the church and her family and even through the pain of losing two children, she stood strong to proclaim the message that is Hope in Jesus for today and for eternity.
In 2001, Jerry and Myrna moved back to Okmulgee to supposedly settle into retirement. This move was most likely at the subtle suggestion by Myrna to be closer to family and help raise her grandchildren. She absolutely loved and spoiled her grandchildren as a August 25, 1939 – July 18, 2025
good Grammy should, from warming their towels in the dryer at bath time, driving them to and from school and attending every single event. She was also quick to cook each one’s favorite food at each meal, even if it was not on the menu.
Myrna welcomed everyone to her home and her table was always full of love, laughter and great food. Every holiday gathering was legendary, and these family times will be greatly missed. She was a fabulous host and cook and even having Myrna’s personal recipe, her chocolate sheet cake may often be imitated, but it will never be duplicated.
Myrna is preceded in death by her best friend and husband of almost 65 years, Jerry Holman Fielder, son Gregory Holman Fielder and daughter Sherry Gayle Fielder Wise.
