With Independence Day festivities approaching, the City of Okmulgee has once again opened the window for residents to obtain permits for setting off fireworks within city limits. The $20 permit is a requirement for any individual wishing to celebrate the holiday with personal fireworks on July 3, 4 or 5.
Applications for the fireworks permit became available on June 1. Residents can apply online at www.okmulgeeonline.com or by calling City Hall at 918-758-1105. Applicants must be at least 18 years of age, and if approved, payment must be made no later than 4:30 p.m. Thursday, July 3. No permits will be issued after this deadline, without exception.
City officials emphasized that the permitting process is not intended to restrict celebration, but rath- er to ensure the safety of residents and property during what is traditionally one of the busiest times of year for emergency responders.
“We understand that fireworks are a valued tradition and part of the celebration,” a statement from city officials reads. “The permit process isn’t about limiting anyone’s freedom – it’s in place to help ensure community safety, reduce fire risks and support a safe holiday for all.”
The use of fireworks without a permit remains prohibited within city limits, and violators could face citations or fines. However, those who take the proper steps and follow city regulations will be allowed to responsibly enjoy the festivities during the approved three-day window.
Residents should be mindful of their neighbors, especially those who may have pets, young children or sensory sensitivities. As always, fireworks should be used safely, away from dry vegetation, buildings or vehicles.
Also remember to clean up any debris left from fireworks displays to keep neighborhoods safe and tidy after the celebrations.
For questions about the permit process or for more information, residents can contact Okmulgee City Hall at the number above or visit the official city website.
With the cooperation of residents and responsible use of fireworks, city officials hope this year’s Independence Day celebrations will be safe, memorable and enjoyable for all.
