The Okmulgee Public Schools Board of Education has postponed its previously scheduled June 10 special election to fill a vacancy in Board Seat Number 4.
In a formal letter dated April 21, addressed to the Okmulgee County Election Board, district attorney Jana Burk explained that the district could not proceed with the June election due to an inability to publish the required legal notice in time. Oklahoma election law (Title 26, Sec- tion 13A-109) requires public notice of special elections to be published within a specific filing period. Missing this deadline meant the district had no choice but to delay the election.
The district will now hold the special election on the next available date – Sept. 9, 2025.
To make this change official, the Board of Education is scheduled to meet on Tuesday, April 29, where members are expected to vote on an amendment to the original resolution calling for the June election. Once approved, the updated resolution will be filed with the Okmulgee County Election Board.
This delay does not affect other board operations, but the vacancy in Seat 4 will remain open until the election is held and a new member is sworn in.
The Okmulgee Times will continue to provide updates following the April 29 board meeting.
