Homeless Shelter celebrates 30 years of service
By KATINA HOLLAND STAFF WRITER

The Okmulgee County Homeless Shelter is proud to celebrate 30 years of unwavering service to the community. To mark this milestone, the shelter will host a special anniversary celebration open to the public, featuring cake, guided tours, honored speakers and heartfelt gratitude for the many individuals and organizations who have supported its mission over the years.

The event will take place Wednesday, April 23, from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. at the shelter’s main location, 214 N. Morton Ave. in Okmulgee. Community members are invited to come together, learn more about the shelter’s work and enjoy a slice of cake in honor of three decades of impact.

Founded in 1995, the Okmulgee County Homeless Shelter (OCHS) was established in response to a growing need for emergency housing and support services in Okmulgee and the surrounding communities. What began as a grassroots effort led by concerned citizens and community leaders has grown into a vital institution providing safety, stability and hope to individuals and families experiencing homelessness.

Over the past three decades, OCHS has evolved to meet the changing needs of its clients. From its early days offering basic shelter, the organization has expanded to provide case management, job readiness training, life skills education and connections to long-term housing and mental health services. The shelter partners with key local organizations like CREOKS Behavioral Health Services and Deep Fork Community Action to ensure wraparound support for each guest.

Through economic downturns, public health challenges and changing social climates, the shelter has remained a beacon of compassion, helping thousands of people find not just shelter, but a path forward. Its success is a testament to the strength of its staff, the commitment of its volunteers and the generosity of the Okmulgee community.

“We are incredibly thankful for the continued support from our partners, including CREOKS, Deep Fork Community Action and so many others who have walked alongside us in this journey,” said Rose Lynch, Executive Director of the Okmulgee County Homeless Shelter. “This celebration is about reflecting on the past, appreciating the present and looking ahead to what we can achieve together.”

Throughout the past 30 years, the shelter has served countless individuals and families in need, offering not just a roof over their heads, but hope, compassion and a path forward. This milestone is a testament to the strength of the community and the power of working together.

Attendees will have the opportunity to take guided tours of the shelter facility, meet staff and volunteers and learn more about the shelter’s ongoing programs and needs. Whether you’re a longtime supporter or new to the cause, everyone is welcome.

Today, OCHS continues to serve as a safe haven and stepping stone toward self-sufficiency, proudly celebrating 30 years of impact in 2025. Come celebrate with us and be part of this special moment in Okmulgee County’s story. Together, we can continue building a future where everyone has a place to call home.

For more information about the celebration or how to get involved, please contact the Okmulgee County Homeless Shelter at 918-756-9098.
