Okmulgee Main Street is taking proactive steps to address the growing feral cat population in the downtown district. A Trap/Neuter/Return (TNR) program will be implemented as a humane and effective method to manage and reduce the number of stray and feral cats.
— Why TNR?
TNR involves the humane trapping of cats, spaying or neutering them, ear-tipping (a universal mark for fixed outdoor cats), and then returning them to their original location. This approach has multiple benefits:
• Population Control: Prevents uncontrolled reproduction and gradually reduces the number of stray cats over time.
• Healthier Cats: Spayed and neutered cats are generally healthier and less prone to disease.
• Community Benefits: A stable, controlled cat population minimizes noise from mating behaviors and territorial fights while contributing to natural rodent control.
— Current Situation
It is estimated that 2040 feral cats currently reside in the Main Street area. Without intervention, this number could rapidly increase, as just 20 cats (assuming half are female) can lead to the birth of approximately 200 kittens in a year. (Source: https:// topcatbreeds.com/howmany- litters-can-a-cathave/) — How You Can Help The TNR operation is scheduled for March 25th, with the cats being transported to Dripping Springs Animal Hospital for necessary procedures before being returned. The community’s support is vital to the success of this initiative. Here’s how you can help:
• Pause Feeding (March 23-25): Refrain from feeding the cats during this period to increase trapping success.
• Donate: Contributions to Okmulgee Main Street will help cover the $57.50 cost per cat, which includes spay/ neuter, rabies vaccination, and ear tipping.
• Volunteer: Assistance is needed for trapping and transporting cats. Special thanks to John Neal of Neal’s Furniture for providing a sheltered location for the cats overnight.
• Spread the Word: Inform fellow business owners and customers about the program to encourage community participation.
• Naming, Feeding & Reporting: A “Cats on Main Street” website is in development to showcase the program’s efforts. Community members can adopt cats for responsible feeding to support rodent control and report any new cats needing TNR services.
— Join Us in Making a Difference The success of this program relies on community involvement. By working together, we can create a healthier and more harmonious environment for both our feline friends and downtown Okmulgee.
