Two Henryetta High School wrestlers, Tayler Hamric and Jason Powders, showcased their talent and resilience at the OSSAA State Wrestling Tournament, giving the Knights faithful plenty to cheer about. While their journeys ended in different rounds, both athletes demonstrated the heart, determination, and skill that define champions.
— Tayler Hamric’s Incredible Run Hamric’s tournament journey was nothing short of dramatic. Entering the Wrestle-In Round, he faced Maust of Victory Christian and delivered a clutch performance, securing the win and earning his spot in the double- elimination bracket. Then, in one of the biggest upsets of the tournament, Hamric stunned the No. 1 seed Brock Smith from Marlow with an 8-6 victory in the quarterfinals. The Henryetta senior battled through every second, proving his toughness and making a statement on the state’s biggest stage.
His incredible run continued into the State Semifinals, where he fought fiercely but ultimately fell in the Consolation Semifinals in heartbreaking fashion – losing to Comanche in a last-second reversal during overtime. The 6-3 loss was a testament to how razor-thin the margins are at the state level, with both of Hamric’s tournament losses coming in matches that could have gone either way.
Though he fell just short of a podium finish, his impact on Henryetta Wrestling will be remembered. His grit, perseverance and ability to take down the best in the state will serve as inspiration for future Knights wrestlers.

Senior Jason Powders also represented Henryetta with pride, stepping onto the mat in the Wrestle-In Round. Facing a tough opponent from Pawhuska, Powders gave it his all but fell by pin in the second period. The loss ended his tournament run, but it does not define his high school career, which has been filled with hard work, growth and dedication to his craft.
-While neither wrestler left with a medal, they left something even more important – a legacy of perseverance, sportsmanship, and determination. Their achievements are a testament to the strength of Henryetta’s wrestling program and the hard work they’ve put in throughout their careers.
