A Legacy of Serving

A Legacy of Serving

With February being Black History Month, a spotlight is being shown on the men and women who have or are serving in the military.

That drive, along with an effort to restore a significant part of Okmulgee’s history, and the many veterans will be the highlight of a fundraiser this Friday.

A community gathering filled with delicious soul food, discussions on topics of importance and even entertainment, is set for this Friday, from 4-7 p.m.

The “Raise the Hut” Restoration Committee is hosting a Soul Food Dinner to benefit the restoration of American Legion Post 103, known as ‘The Hut’ with the event being held at the Dunbar All-School Association Center, formerly the Banneker Building, located at 401 E. 2nd Street in Okmulgee.

For just $20 per ticket, attendees will enjoy a hearty home-cooked meal featuring soul food favorites, including neck bones, pigs’ feet, fried chicken, beans, greens, cornbread and desserts. Guests are encouraged to dine in and enjoy the warm atmosphere while engaging in discussions that impact the community.

For those wanting more information, or event to get a ticket in advice, you can call American Legion Post 103 Commander Michael Hill at 918-3041567.

Beyond great food, the event aims to spark meaningful community discussions. Attendees will have the opportunity to:

• Discuss the possibility of restarting the Community Chamber of Commerce.

• Talk about the upcoming County Commissioner District 1 election.

• Recognize and celebrate local veterans for their service and sacrifices.

• Enjoy live performances from local talent. The event is sponsored by the “Raise the Hut” Restoration Committee, a group dedicated to preserving and revitalizing American Legion Post 103, which has long been a cornerstone for local veterans and the community.

This fundraiser is more than just a dinner – it’s a chance for Okmulgee residents to come together, share ideas, honor veterans, and invest in the future of their community.

Currently, submissions of photos and information for any Black veterans from Okmulgee, are being accepted. Quite a few of looked through their family history and have submitted photos and a brief history, and even discovered that there were military personnel going back several generations.

You can send information and photo to patrick@bigbasinllc.com.
