Pirates outlast Stratford in hard-fought battle
By DARRELL FROST SPORTS WRITER

The Preston Pirates secured a commanding 60-47 victory over Stratford in a heated basketball matchup on Feb. 14. The game was a tale of two halves, with the Pirates pulling away late to seal the win.

— First Half: A Tight Contest

Both teams came out strong in the opening quarter, exchanging buckets in a fast-paced game. Stratford leaned on C. Owens, who tallied 14 points to lead his team’s offense. Meanwhile, Preston’s Rylan Hicks stepped up early, contributing 14 first-half points of his own.

At halftime, the Pirates held a narrow 26-25 lead, showcasing their ability to answer Stratford’s surges. The battle in the paint was fierce, as Stratford’s aggressive inside play kept them within striking distance.

— Second Half: Pirates Take Over The Pirates found another gear in the third quarter, outscoring Stratford 2110 in a dominant stretch that swung the momentum in their favor. Carter Fuller (15 points) fueled the Pirates’ offensive explosion, hitting timely shots and forcing key turnovers.

Stratford struggled to keep pace, with only D. Ross (6 points) and A. Aguinaga (7 points) contributing consistent scoring in the second half. The Pirates’ defense tightened, limiting Stratford’s looks from beyond the arc and controlling the boards.

— Closing Moments

Despite a valiant effort, Stratford couldn’t overcome the Pirates’ second-half surge. Free throws proved crucial, as Preston capitalized on their opportunities at the line, making 10 of 16 attempts, compared to Stratford’s 6 of 7.

With their depth and balanced scoring, Preston closed out the game strong, finishing with a 60-47 victory. Their 22-point fourth quarter sealed the deal, with Pheonix Finch’s clutch free throws and timely baskets keeping Stratford at bay.
