Shirley Gean McKay, known to many as “Bess,” passed away January, 4, 2025, in Okmulgee. She was born in Claremore on August 12, 1950, to Benny and Lillian (Albert) Leybas.
Her family moved to the Okmulgee area when she was in grade school, she attended school at Bryant, then the Jones Academy and later received a degree in Shoe, Boot and Saddlery from OSUIT. She worked at George Nigh until her retirement as a nurse aide.
Bess loved to sew and dabbled in photography, always sharing her pictures with friends and family. Her favorite pastime was thrifting. She could find a bargain anywhere. She cherished the times she spent fishing with her grandson.

Arbeka Church. This is where she learned to walk closely with God and built her long-lasting faith.
Shirley is preceded in death by her parents Benny and Lillian; brothers Raymond Leybas and Kenny Leybas; sister Ramona Leybas; and niece Sissy Barton.
She is survived by son Richard McKay and wife Debbie; grandson Richard “Kane” McKay and fiance Madison Antle; sister Bertha Brown, Daisy Howell; brothers Benny “Sonny” Leybas, Jr., Daniel Leybas, Johnny Leybas, Michael Leybas and Waddle Leybas. She will be greatly missed by those that knew and loved her.
A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Friday, January 17, 2025, at McClendon-Winters Funeral Home, with Johnny Leybas officiating.
