Eastern Oklahoma Development District (EODD) Area Agency on Aging, Long-Term Care Ombudsman Program would like to wish everyone a happy 2025! A new year brings new goals and aspirations for self-transformation, but have you ever made a resolution to help others? Well, if you are looking to create change in your community and in others’ lives, think about becoming a volunteer.

The Ombudsman Program volunteers are an important part of serving residents in nursing homes, assisted living, and residential care facilities. Our goal is to act as advocates to empower residents and their families. Ombudsman volunteers assist in addressing concerns to improve the overall quality of life and care, while sometimes being the voice for those unable or unwilling to speak for themselves. Many residents in nursing homes have little to no visitors and some residents are unable to leave their rooms at all. Having a visitor come with a caring heart and voice to listen can make a world of difference. Although residing in long-term care should not exclude residents from the community, there can be many barriers for residents to participate in outside activities. Your visit can help alleviate residents’ feelings of social isolation and loneliness.
