Okmulgee County Sports The Year in Review

The year 2024 was a remarkable period for high school sports in Okmulgee County, highlighted by significant achievements across various disciplines. Leading the accolades were the Wilson Tigers boys’ basketball team and the Dewar Dragons football team, both securing state championships and bringing pride to their communities.

Here are just a few of the highlights: — Wilson Tigers Boys’ Basketball Triumph The Wilson Tigers showcased exceptional talent and determination throughout the basketball season, culminating in a state championship victory. Their journey was marked by strategic gameplay, cohesive teamwork, and standout performances that captivated local fans and established the team as a formidable force in the state.

— Dewar Dragons’ Football Championship

The Dewar Dragons dominated the football field, achieving an undefeated season and clinching the state championship title. Under the leadership of Coach Josh Been, the Dragons demonstrated offensive prowess and defensive strength, notably delivering a 60-0 shutout against the Depew Hornets in the first round of the Class B-1 playoffs. Key players, including quarterback Peyton Kilhoffer and running back Braelin Lewis, were instrumental in the team’s success.

Coach Been was honored for achieving his 200th win as a football coach; while Preston High School baseball coach Ryan Hudson reached a milestone 400 wins as a coach. — Henryetta Knights’ Resilient Football Season The Henryetta Knights exhibited resilience throughout their football season, finishing with an 8-3 record. Despite a valiant effort, their playoff run concluded with a 26-12 loss to the Salina Wildcats. The Knights’ season was marked by strong offensive performances and a steadfast defense, earning them recognition as a competitive team in the district.

— Beggs Golden Demons’ Football Playoff Journey The Beggs Golden Demons made a significant impact in the football playoffs, delivering a commanding 43-0 shutout against the Alva Goldbugs in the first round. Their season, characterized by a potent offense and a robust defense, advanced them to face the undefeated Vian Wolverines in the subsequent round, highlighting their status as a formidable contender in Class 2A-II.

— Cross Country Achievements

Okmulgee County’s presence was notable at the 2024 Cross Country State Championship Meet held at Edmond Santa Fe High School. Athletes from Henryetta, Beggs, Preston, and Dewar represented their schools with distinction. Henryetta’s senior runner, Kenleigh Kaler, earned selection to the Oklahoma Cross Country Track Coaches Association All-Star Team, recognizing her as one of the top senior runners in the state.

— Fastpitch Softball Postseason Endeavors As the fastpitch softball season approached its climax, Okmulgee County high school teams prepared for critical regional tournaments with aspirations of advancing to state competitions. Teams such as the Wilson Lady Tigers, Dewar Lady Dragons, and Preston Lady Pirates showcased their skills and competitive spirit, aiming for deep postseason runs.

— GCTC Goblins eSports State Champs

The Green Country Technology Center Green Goblins were crowned State Camps. Congratulations to Riley Barnett for dominating Tekken 8 and to the SMASH Crews dream team: Riley Barnett, Jefferson Gutierez, and Zander Mcvey. GCTC is super proud of their players for clinching State Champion titles in Tekken 8 and Super Smash Bros Ultimate Crews.

In December, Beggs Middle School won the Fortnite State Championship. Four young men, all 7thgrade students at BMS, were honored as Fortnite State Champions in the Oklahoma Scholastics eSports (OKSE) league. Easton Howell, Hunter Driver, Camden Remington and Jude Wells comprised the championship Fortnite team.

— Athletes Participate in All-State Games, Events The Morris Eagles were named 2024 Football Class 2A Division 2 Academic State Champ.

Jaylen Zackery represented Morris in the 2024 Oklahoma Native American All State East in El Reno on June 7. The East took home the win over the West team 12-7.

Okmulgee Bulldogs Jeremiah Harley and Asaiah Leybas, Dewar’s Zach Mullen, and Henryetta High School’s Shelby Kilhoffer were just a few of the county senior athletes that participated in All-State games during the past year.

— Community Engagement & Support

The successes of these teams were bolstered by unwavering community support. Fundraising initiatives, such as those by the Dewar Dragons to secure championship rings, underscored the communal pride and investment in the achievements of local athletes. Local businesses and residents rallied to contribute, reflecting the deep-rooted connection between the schools and their communities.

In summary, 2024 was a year of athletic excellence for Okmulgee County high schools, with teams and individuals reaching significant milestones. The dedication of the athletes, combined with community support, has set a high standard for future seasons and inspired a new generation of competitors.
