Wilson wrestler cracks top 10 in 3A state rankings

Wilson High School junior Zechariah Tecumseh has made a triumphant return to the wrestling mat, breaking into the top 10 of Oklahoma’s 3A State rankings this week in the 126-pound weight class.

Tecumseh’s journey to this milestone has been anything but easy. He suffered a head injury during Wilson’s football state quarterfinal game earlier this season, which sidelined him for much of the fall. Despite the setback, Tecumseh has showcased his resilience and skill, proving why he remains a force to be reckoned with in the 3A wrestling division.

His season got off to a rocky start at the Edmond Memorial Tournament in November. Tecumseh showed promise but was forced to medically forfeit out of the tournament as he continued to recover from his injury. However, the junior wrestler returned with a vengeance at the Gary McKee Bulldog Classic in Okmulgee on December 7, putting the entire 126-pound class on notice.

Tecumseh dominated his way to the semifinals before facing off against a formidable opponent – the reigning 3A defending state champion and threetime titleholder. Despite the loss, Tecumseh’s performance was a testament to his talent and grit. He finished the tournament in fourth place after narrowly dropping a hard-fought thirdplace match against his Bishop Kelley opponent.

This week’s ranking marks Tecumseh’s first appearance in the 3A standings this season. Last year, as a sophomore, he climbed as high as No. 8. With a combination of tenacity on the mat and dedication to improvement, Tecumseh has once again placed himself among the state’s elite wrestlers.

Outside of his achievements in wrestling, Tecumseh is a standout in the classroom. Teachers at Wilson High School praise him as a model student, highlighting his commitment to academics alongside his athletic pursuits. Additionally, Tecumseh dedicates his time to mentoring younger athletes, assisting as a coach for The Mojo Grappling Academy. Whether helping during practice or guiding students at weekend tournaments when he’s not competing, Tecumseh’s leadership extends far beyond the wrestling mat.

As the season progresses, all eyes will be on Tecumseh as he continues his quest for success in the 126-pound division. If his early performances are any indication, this young athlete has a bright future ahead.
