Bringing Home the Gold
By PATRICK FORD NEWS EDITOR

The Dewar Dragons solidified their place as a powerhouse in Oklahoma high school football, claiming their second Class B-I State Championship in five years with a decisive 44-12 victory over the Laverne Tigers on Thursday at Chad Richison Stadium. The Dragons, who have been unstoppable all season, showcased their dominance on both sides of the ball to cap off an extraordinary 13-1 season.

— An Emotional Season for Coach Been Dewar’s head coach, Josh Been, was overcome with emotion as his players celebrated on the field. For Been, the season was marked by personal loss and resilience.

“It’s been a really emotional year for me,” said Been in an interview after the game, holding back tears. “But our guys really had my back, they had each other’s back. Everybody stuck together. Through all that, they had me the whole time. We just bonded like no other team I’ve had. It made a huge difference in how we ended up.”

— Offensive Brilliance

The Dragons rolled up an astonishing 512 yards of offense, including 463 yards on the ground. Junior running back Braelin Lewis and sophomore quarterback Peyton Kilhoffer led the charge, accounting for 488 yards and six touchdowns between them. Lewis was the workhorse, carrying the ball 35 times for 279 yards and a touchdown. Kilhoffer added 160 yards and three touchdowns on 17 carries and threw for two more scores.

“Our offensive line’s just been tremendous all year long, and tonight was no different,” Been said. “From start to finish, we just ran the ball. We like to throw it because we’ve got a quarterback that can do it, but when you’re running the football like that, there’s no reason to.”

Kilhoffer’s touchdown passes included a 24-yard strike to Ben Atoigue and a 12yard connection with Naea Corbin. The Dragons also converted four two-point attempts, further emphasizing their offensive efficiency.

— Defensive Dominance

While Dewar’s offense stole the spotlight, the defense delivered an equally impressive performance. The Dragons held Laverne to just 156 total yards and eight first downs, limiting the Tigers to a single third-down conversion in 10 attempts. Dewar’s defense also sacked Laverne quarterback Wyatt Tillery four times and forced a critical fumble.

Laverne’s only bright spot came early in the game when Felix Teal returned the opening kickoff 91 yards for a touchdown. Teal later added a 23-yard rushing touchdown, but the Tigers were unable to sustain any offensive momentum.

— Key Moments & Statistics The Dragons led 16-12 at halftime, thanks to Kilhoffer’s 5-yard touchdown run and a successful two-point conversion. Dewar’s dominance became apparent in the second half, with Kilhoffer breaking loose for touchdown runs of 34 and 36 yards. Lewis capped the scoring with a 1-yard touchdown run and another two-point conversion.
