Eye on the Prize

The Dewar Dragons football team is set to compete for the Class B-I State Championship this Thursday at 1 p.m. at the University of Central Oklahoma in Edmond. Under the leadership of veteran head coach Josh Been, the Dragons are riding high on a remarkable season that has showcased their offensive and defensive prowess, culminating in an impressive 12-1 record.

— Season Highlights Dewar’s path to the championship has been nothing short of dominant. In their most recent matchup, the Dragons dismantled Hollis with a commanding 45-0 victory in the semifinals, extending their winning streak to 11 games. Dewar’s offense has been relentless throughout the season, averaging 54.8 points per game while their defense has consistently stifled opponents, allowing only 7.3 points per game.

This season’s success builds on Coach Been’s storied career, which includes 200 career wins and a state championship title in 2020. — Key Players

The Dragons’ success has been fueled by standout performances from several players:

• Peyton Kilhoffer (Quarterback): Kilhoffer has consistently led the offense with precision passing and smart decision-making, connecting with key targets like Ben Atoigue.

• Braelin Lewis (Running Back): Lewis has been a workhorse on the ground, contributing multiple rushing touchdowns in critical games.

• Ben Atoigue (Wide Receiver/Defensive Back): Atoigue has shined on both sides of the ball, with game-changing receptions and interceptions.

• JoJo Waters (Utility Player): Waters has been instrumental in executing two-point conversions and making key plays on special teams.

• Cash Faulkner (Special Teams): Faulkner’s electrifying punt and kickoff returns have provided crucial momentum shifts.

— Coach Josh Been: A Legacy of Excellence Coach Josh Been’s impact on Dewar football is undeniable. In his 19th season as head coach, he has built a program synonymous with success:

• 200+ Wins, 57 Losses: A testament to his consistency and expertise.

• 12 District Championships: Demonstrating his ability to dominate the regular season.

• 18 Playoff Appearances: Reflecting the Dragons’ perennial status as a postseason contender.

• 2020 State Championship: The crown jewel of his coaching career, achieved with a perfect 15-0 record.

Been’s leadership and strategic acumen have been pivotal in shaping the Dragons into one of Oklahoma’s elite 8-man football programs.

— Championship Matchup

The Dragons’ opponent, the Laverne Tigers, boasts an equally impressive 12-1 record. Laverne advanced to the championship after a decisive 46-6 victory over the Garber Wolverines. Known for their high-powered offense, the Tigers have averaged 48.3 points per game this season and are riding a nine-game winning streak. Thursday’s clash promises to be a battle of titans, with both teams vying for the ultimate prize.

— Road to the Championship

Dewar’s 2024 season includes several notable victories:

• Sept. 6 vs. Wetumka: 69-0

• Oct. 11 at Savanna: 52-0

• Nov. 7 vs. Caddo: 47-0

• Nov. 15 vs. Depew: 60-0

• Nov. 29 vs. Hollis: 45-0 The Dragons have consistently demonstrated their ability to dominate in all phases of the game, making them formidable contenders for the state title.

— Looking Ahead

As the Dragons prepare to take on Laverne at UCO in Edmond, the stakes couldn’t be higher. The Dewar community has rallied behind their team, eager to see them bring home another championship trophy. With their combination of talent, experience, and determination, the Dragons are poised to etch their names into Oklahoma football history once again.
