Dudes Endeavor
By DAWN CARTER REPORTER

A remarkable partnership is crafting not just beautiful wooden creations but also a story of faith and friendship. Bryan and Tom, the duo behind Dudes Endeavor, have turned personal challenges into opportunities for creativity and connection.

— A Friendship Forged by Faith Tom, a former plumber with over 30 years of experience, lost his sight 11 years ago due to complications from high blood pressure and heat strokes. Determined to adapt, he attended a school for the blind in Boise, Idaho, where he discovered a passion for woodworking. Now, he creates intricate wooden pieces, a skill that has brought purpose and joy to his life.

Bryan, on the other hand, faced his own life-altering moment at the age of 13 when he was shot in the head and remained in a coma for seven months. His recovery has been nothing short of miraculous, and he attributes much of his strength to his faith.

The two met at church, where Bryan had prayed for a friend. “I just thanked God for all my blessings and prayed for a good friend,” Bryan shared. That prayer was answered when he met Tom. The connection was instant, and the two began attending YMCA programs together, including Senior Sneakers and swimming classes.

— The Birth of Dudes Endeavor The idea for their business, Dudes Endeavor, came about serendipitously. Tom was already crafting tissue boxes, cutting boards, and other wooden items as a hobby. After a YMCA acquaintance suggested he showcase his work downtown, Bryan encouraged him to take the leap.

With Bryan’s encouragement and Tom’s skills, the two decided to team up. “Dude” was a nickname Bryan often used for Tom, making “Dudes Endeavor” a fitting name for their shared venture. Tom’s wife also plays a role in the business, using a laser engraver to add intricate designs to the pieces.

Bryan jokingly called Tom “a blind guy starting carpentry with no instruction – a real ‘unicorn on Tuesday.’” The phrase, a mix of humor and admiration, perfectly captures the spirit of their partnership: rare, extraordinary, and full of surprises.

— Crafting Through Challenges Tom’s woodworking process is nothing short of inspiring. Using tools adapted for his blindness, he meticulously measures and assembles each piece. His humorous approach to challenges – like accidentally cutting pieces too small – has led to some of their best designs. “The things I think are messed up often turn out to be the best,” Tom remarked. “It’s just how God works.”

Bryan, who describes himself as Tom’s “carpenter’s apprentice,” adds a steady hand and unwavering support to the operation. Together, they bring their products to life, combining creativity, craftsmanship and faith.

— A Community Effort

Dudes Endeavor officially opened this past Thursday at the Mall of Okmulgee, marking the beginning of their shared business venture. From their booth, the duo is sharing their story and products with the community. Their handcrafted work, including cutting boards, tissue boxes, and other wooden items, reflects their determination, creativity, and faith. “God brought us together for a reason,” Tom reflected. “It’s funny how life works out, but here we are – two blind guys making something beautiful.”

For those interested in supporting Bryan and Tom’s work, Dudes Endeavor can be found at the Mall of Okmulgee. Their story, humor, and unique outlook are a reminder that with faith, friendship, and a little creativity, challenges can be turned into blessings – even on a “unicorn Tuesday.”
