Michael Joe Burgess passed away on Wednesday, September 11, 2024, at Clarehouse after a short illness. He was 74 years of age. Michael was born December 1, 1949, in Wewoka to the late William F. and Madeline, (Bemo) Burgess. He graduated from Wewoka High School. He married Karen Sue Shelton on June 7, 1969, in Wewoka. Michael was a member of the Oklahoma National Guard and worked as a concrete finisher throughout his life. He enjoyed fishing and hunting and especially loved being with his grand kids and cooking on the grill. He was preceded in death by his parents, wife Karen in December 1, 1949 – September 11, 2024
2020; and siblings, Jimmy Burgess and Loretta Finkenburg. Survivors include his daughter, Jill Phelps and husband Doug; a son, John Burgess; grandchildren, Natalie, Kaci, Joshua, Preston and C.J.; great grandchildren, Emma, William and Noah; siblings, Melvin Burgess, Anna Kitsmiller and husband Walter and Marlene Burgess; and a sister-in-law, Ruth Vaden.
Friends may visit the funeral home on Monday, September 16, 2024, from 12-6 p.m.
A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, September 17, 2024, at Nuyaka Baptist Church, with Rev. Dan Factor officiating. Interment will follow at Tuskegee Cemetery.
