The Morris Eagles kicked off their football season on Friday night on the road, but it wasn’t the debut they had hoped for as they faced a challenging 62-14 defeat at the hands of the Hartshorne Miners.
The Eagles struggled from the outset, finding themselves trailing 4014 by halftime.
The Eagles got on the board in the second quarter with a 34yard run by quarterback Adain Clay. Clay had seven carries for 51 yards during the game.
Following an interception by the Eagles, Landon Martin then connected with Robert Woods for a 14-yard touchdown to put Morris at 12 points.
The Eagles also recovered a fumble by the Miners.
On defense, senior Drake Grogan had four tackles, three assists and one sack. Grant Clay and Andrew Bruce each had two tackles and three assists.
Hartshorne’s victory was powered by standout performances, particularly from Carter Johnson, whose 74 rushing yards and two touchdowns proved pivotal in securing the win.
The win extends Hartshorne’s streak to two consecutive victories, pushing their early-season record to 2-0.
Looking ahead, Coach Robert Daniels and the Eagles will aim to bounce back as they travel to Liberty at 7 p.m. this Friday. The following week, the Eagles will have their first home game, as well as Homecoming, as they take on the Haskell Haymakers.
