Season openers tonight for three county football teams
By PATRICK FORD NEWS EDITOR

Three county football teams are set to kick off their season with non-district matchups that will help set the tone for the year.

The Okmulgee Bulldogs, under Coach Randy Jackson, are a young squad with several returning players, looking to prove themselves on the field, and improve on their 0-10 record from a year ago.

The final game of the 2023 season was a close heartbreaker as they lost by one point to the Morris Eagles.

Game time at historic Harmon Stadium begins at 7 p.m. and everyone is encouraged to come out and show your support for the team.

Up north, new Beggs Golden Demon Coach Tyler Blizzard is no doubt excited to see what his squad has learned and perfected over the summer. With a large number of players, and some new faces in the lineup, the Demons look to return to playoff contention.

Beggs will face Verdigris in their opener at Tate Field, beginning at 7 p.m. Last year, the Golden Demons beat the Cardinals by one touchdown, 44-36.

Down south, Coach Weston McGill and the Henryetta Golden Knights, will face the Kellyville Ponies in a 7 p.m. match at Cameron Stadium.

Coach McGill is counting on senior Brady Norman at quarterback, to use his expertise to guide the Knights to a victory, and make a repeat appearance in the playoffs. The Knights have a full roster of talented players eager to show their mettle on the field.

The Golden Knights ended last season with a 6-5 (4-3 district) record, and will face the Kellyville Ponies who want to improve after a disappointing 0-10 finish last year.

For those wishing to see the game, but are unable to attend in person, the matchup will be broadcast on the new KnightVision TV. See more information on the Henryetta Knight Vision Facebook page.

Those attending the game in person should be aware of the all the activity in the area due to the kickoff of the Labor Day Celebration, as parking will be limited.

Other county high schools are getting in playing time at scrimmages, with the Morris Eagles, Wilson Tigers and Dewar Dragons kicking off their season officially on Sept. 6.
