Lady Pirates fall to Latta in hard-fought contest
By PATRICK FORD NEWS EDITOR

The Preston Lady Pirates put up a valiant effort on Thursday but ultimately fell short against the Latta Panthers, losing 5-3 in a competitive matchup.

Latta struck early, with Talise Parnell driving in the first run of the game in the top of the first inning with a single. The Panthers added two more runs in the third inning, courtesy of a clutch single by Kymber Davis, giving them a 3-0 lead.

Despite the early deficit, the Lady Pirates battled back. Preston managed to get on the board, with Olivia Beaver and Kristen Houlby each driving in a run, narrowing the gap. However, the Lady Pirates were unable to overcome Latta’s pitching and timely hitting.

Taylan Starr, who took the loss for Preston, pitched a solid game despite the outcome. Starr went the distance, throwing seven innings and allowing five runs (four earned) on eight hits. She struck out an impressive 10 batters while walking only one.

Offensively, Starr also led the way for the Lady Pirates, going 2-for-2 at the plate from the leadoff spot. Preston’s defense was sharp, as they played er- ror-free softball, with Sophia Bunner making the most plays with five chances in the field.

For Latta, Talise Parnell earned the win, allowing seven hits and three runs (two earned) over seven innings. Parnell struck out five and walked three, keeping the Lady Pirates’ hitters in check for most of the game. Kymber Davis was a key contributor, going 2-for-3 with two RBIs, while Jayse Smith led the Panthers with a perfect 3-for-3 day at the plate.

Latta also turned a crucial double play in the game, helping to stifle a potential Preston rally.

The Preston Lady Pirates looked to bounce back as they hosted the Porum Lady Panthers on Monday.
