The Okmulgee-Okfuskee County Youth Services celebrated a landmark moment Tuesday with the grand opening and ribbon-cutting ceremony of their new office in Okemah, located at 124 N 5th Street. The event was attended by local officials, community leaders, and supporters, highlighting the collaborative efforts that brought the facility to fruition.
The opening ceremony, with a prayer by Rev. McKinley Rice of St. Matthew Baptist Church of Okmulgee, commenced with speeches underscoring the importance of supporting youth in need. Dr. Sherrie Carter-Greene, instrumental in steering the project, expressed gratitude for the collaborative efforts that made the new facility a reality. ‘This is more than just a building; it’s a beacon of hope for our children,’ she remarked.
Although unable to attend, Senator Roger Thompson’s wife was in attendance, along with former State Rep. Steve Lewis, who shared words on the work done through the legislature in securing funding through the ARPA grant. Though there were initial hurdles ensuring the project’s success, ‘Senator Thompson’s dedication to youth services is transformative for our community.’
Empowering Youth Through Visionary Leadership Dr. Peter Messiah, CEO of the Oklahoma Association of Youth Services, highlighted the strategic vision behind the project.
‘We met with Senator Thompson early on, and despite initial uncertainties, his support paved the way for securing substantial funding,’ he stated. Dr. Messiah also credited Dr. Sherrie for her leadership in crafting a compelling proposal that secured over $30 million in funding. Legislator Chris Banning’s Personal Connection Reflecting on his own journey, Legislator Chris Banning shared a personal story of resilience and the critical role support systems play in shaping young lives. ‘I was once one of those kids,’ he admitted, underscoring the impact of community support and guidance. His commitment to continued legislative support resonated deeply with attendees.
Community Collaboration and Future Initiatives
The ceremony highlighted the collaborative spirit between local agencies and state officials, emphasizing a shared commitment to improving the lives of Oklahoma’s youth.
‘This facility represents our collective dedication to providing essential services and support,’ noted Amber Miller, representing the Office of Youth Affairs.
Several board members, including Jana Cluck of Henryetta, praised the work done by the agency and the beautiful new facility.
A Facility with Purpose
The new office will house critical programs including protective parenting and first-time offender initiatives, aiming to intervene early and empower youth to make positive life choices.
Cindy Lane, a key member of the youth services team, expressed gratitude for the community’s support.
‘This facility is not just a space; it’s a place where lives will be transformed,’ she, along with other staff members, stated about the new office.
Dr. Carter-Greene and staff are thankful to the many individuals from around the area who traveled to Okemah in join in the celebration.
