MPS Board hears concerns on new valedictorian policy
By JOSHUA JACKSON REPORTER

The Morris School Board met on Monday night for their regular meeting, addressing recent policy changes and other preparations for the new year.

During public comment, resident Spike Casey expressed concerns about a new valedictorian qualification policy. Although the specifics of the policy – set to be implemented this year – were not fully disclosed, Casey argued that the language could discriminate against lower-income students who cannot afford additional classes or resources, potentially excluding them from valedictorian consideration.

Later in the meeting, the board accepted the 202425 handbook, except for the graduation requirements section, which will be revisited for further consideration.

The board approved the previous meeting minutes and the monthly financial reports. They also approved contract renewals with OPSRC and Sylogist ED, the surplus of a 2008 Chevy Impala, an FY25 lease-purchase agreement for a new activity bus, and an activity transfer of $135.81 from the Rainy Day account to the MS Student account, renaming it MS General Activity. Superintendent Becky Alexander provided her first official monthly report, giving an update on the current bond program, which was reported to be on track and within budget. She also discussed ongoing repairs, expected damage payouts, upcoming conferences, and goal-setting for the academic year. The board approved updated policies on digital and electronic communication with students, aligning with new state regulations to enhance student safety and privacy.

New contracts for essential resources for the upcoming school year were approved, including agreements for fuel, dairy, and bakery products, as well as chemical supplies for maintenance needs. Accreditation applications for 1080 hours and library deregulation were also approved.

The board approved a 20-cent per hour pay raise for support staff. Superintendent Alexander mentioned the need to remain competitive with local employers.

Following an executive session, the board reconvened to approve several teacher and support staff positions for the upcoming school year, including coaching and extra duty assignments.
