Okmulgee Public School board, staff and administration and the Okmulgee Education Foundation and community paid tribute to Superintendent Renee Dove, whose final day of service to the district was June 13. The event was held at the Center for Aviation and Advancing Technology (C.A.A.T), located in the former Okmulgee Elementary School (previously Eastside Elementary), where Dove got her start in education.
The effect that Dove has had on so many lives was evident after OPS staff member Mariah Price asked those who had been touched by Supt. Dove to stand.
Every person in attendance stood and gave a thunderous applause for the educator who dedicated her life to impacting young lives for 48 years.
Mayor Mickey Baldwin read a proclamation naming June 13 as “Renee Dove Day” in the City of Okmulgee.
Former student, OHS alumni and current State Rep. Scott Fetgatter shared memories of Dove during his years in Okmulgee Schools, and thanked her for her support, encouragement and collaboration in the community. He also read a State Proclamation honoring Dove.
Several special announcements were made during the event: Okmulgee Education Foundation President Margaret Hess thanked Dove for her work with the group, and announced the start of the Renee Dove Scholarship ($1,500), that will be given to a deserving senior beginning the next school year.
OPS Board President Leroy Parker was joined by fellow members Mike James and Krystal Bohannon. After sharing memories of first meeting Dove back when he was a 6th grade student, he announced that the new multi-purpose gym and storm shelter that will be built next to the Okmulgee Primary School would be named in her honor.
For many years, Dove served as librarian at Okmulgee Elementary School, and her love for reading has continued throughout the years.
A special chair, engraved with her name was presented to Dove, but the chair won’t be going home with her.
It will be placed in the library at Okmulgee Primary School, with an invitation for Dove to come and read to the children, to which she graciously accepted.
As she prepares to embark on a new chapter of rest and rejuvenation, Renee Dove is the epitome of a passionate educator and leader who will be missed, but will still keep busy in the community and in her church in the years to come.
