Lummy Leon Newberry

Lummy Leon Newberry was born on December 1, 1938, near Beggs.

He passed from this life on Tuesday, June 11, 2024, in Tulsa. He is preceded in death by his wife Carol; his father Columbus “Lum” Newberry; his mother Mary; three brothers Robert, Bill and Dal; three sisters Ruth, Dolly, and Jequita; and two half-sisters Maxine and Addie.

He is survived by his two daughters Tena of Dallas and Dee Ann with her husband Lyndon of Alamo and Crosby, N. Dak.; four grandchildren Jake and Dinda, Samuel, Faith and Benjamin; one brother Carl; two sisters-in-law Carolyn and Kathy; many nephews and nieces, and many friends.

While serving in the United States Marine Corps, Lum met the love of his life, Carol Wynne. They were married on August 10, 1962, in Ravia.

Lum was honorably discharged from the 45th Division of the 279th Infantry, Headquarters Company in December 31, 1938 – June 11, 2024

Okmulgee in 1958 and the United States Marine Corps in 1962. He finished the degree of Bachelor of Science in Education at Central State University in 1967, the Master of Education Degree at Southeastern Oklahoma University in 1971, and the Doctor of Education Degree at Oklahoma State University in 1978. He was ordained into the ministry by the Church of the Nazarene in 1973 at Henryetta. He loved the Lord Jesus Christ, America, his family, and all his friends.

Lum and Carol were pastors of six churches, all in Oklahoma. He retired from the active pastoral ministry in 2003. He served at the Cherokee Worship Center in Tulsa for eight years as the Bible teacher/ preacher and the Tulsa RV Park Cowboy Church. He was an Elementary School Teacher, Elementary Counselor, and Assistant Principal until his retirement in 1996.

A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, June 14, 2024, at Okmulgee Cemetery.
