Last week, American Legion Post 103 held an election of new post officers, as the chapter begins a revival of sorts.
Post 103, also known as Haygood- Sheppard, holds a storied history deeply intertwined with the African-American community of Okmulgee.
During the session March 21, Mike Hill was named as Vice-Commander and Service Officer, charged with overseeing various service initiatives and assisting the Commander.
David Wilson was elected Chaplain, with Collette Talton stepping into the position of adjutant.
Larry Lovett took on the mantle of finance officer, entrusted with the responsible stewardship of the post’s resources.
No commander of the post was chosen at this time.
District 2B Commander, Art Corrales, officiated the oath and swearing in proceedings, his words resonating with a sense of excitement and anticipation for the resurgence of Post 103 within Okmulgee.
Commander Corrales underscored the importance of this moment, recognizing the historical significance and the vital role Post 103 has played and continues to play within the community.
Post 103, originally established as the first Negro Legion post in Okmulgee, served as a vital hub for African American veterans, offering camaraderie, support, and advocacy. Named in honor of Henry Haygood and Allen Sheppard, two courageous individuals who made the ultimate sacrifice in service to their country during WWI and WWII respectively, Post 103 embodied the resilience and bravery of Okmulgee’s African American community.
The privilege of having an active American Legion post within the African American community cannot be overstated. It provided a platform for social gatherings, civic engagement, and mutual support, fostering a sense of belonging and pride within the community.
As Post 103 embarks on this new journey, it is imperative that the community rally behind this endeavor with support. Collective encouragement and participation will be instrumental in ensuring the success and longevity of Post 103.
