Dragons capture state powerlifting crown

Dewar outlasts Webbers Falls for Class B title

The Dewar Dragon high school powerlifting team completed the 2024 sweep of state championships in Class B this past Saturday at El Reno High School.

The Dragons outlasted the Webbers Falls Warriors for the Class B state championship crown, finishing 26 points ahead of the Sequoyah County squad, 84-58.

The Dewar powerlifting squad was second overall to Crooked Oak for the overall Small School (2A-C) state champion, as the Ruf-Nex captured the Class 2A state crown with 99 team points.

Saturday’s Class B state crown was the second for the Dragons in 2024, as the Okmulgee County squad was crowned the 8-Man state champion on February 21 in Waukomis with 165 team points, finishing 13 points over runner-up Laverne. The Dragons’ team points in the Class B portion of the 8-Man state powerlifting meet was the most overall in both B and C and was 124 points ahead of the Class C state champion – Bowlegs, who finished with 41 team points at the meet.

Saturday’s state championship was the third for the Dragons in the past two years, joining the junior high state championship in 2023.

The top individual performer for the Dragons at Saturday’s state powerlifting meet was Isaac Powell, who took home the state championship in the 220-pound weight class with a total weight score of 1,500 pounds.

Naea Corbin and Kade Henderson were crowned state runner-up at the meet with Corbin finishing second in the 198-pound weight class with a total weight score of 1,320 pounds, while Henderson was second overall in the 242-pound weight class with a total weight score of 1,365 pounds.

Other individual performers for Dewar at Saturday’s state powerlifting meet in El Reno were:

• Cash Faulkner (132 lbs.) – 7th; 845 lbs.

• Keelan Berry (157 lbs.) – 7th; 1,090 lbs.

• Nevin Corbin (198 lbs.) – 4th; 1,270 lbs.

• Damian Smith (220 lbs.) – 7th; 1,210 lbs.

• Kade Birdtail (275 lbs.) – 10th; 1,270 lbs.

The Dragons’ total team weight score at the state powerlifting meet was 9,870 pounds.
