Lady Dragons improve to 9-0 with 4-straight run-rule wins
By LARRY OWEN SPORTS EDITOR

The Dewar Lady Dragon varsity slowpitch softball team earned four run-rule wins earlier this week to improve to 9-0 on the year.

The Lady Dragons began the week with back-to-back home wins Monday against the Glencoe Lady Panthers, earning runrule decisions 12-1 and 14-3, respectively.

The Dewar ladies continued their current hot streak on Tuesday with a pair of shutout wins at Okmulgee. The Lady Dragons’ first win Tuesday came by an 18-0 margin against the host Okmulgee Lady Bulldogs, while the Dewar diamond squad capped off Tuesday’s action in Okmulgee with a 19-0 victory over the Webbers Falls Lady Warriors.

(Editor’s Note: Okmulgee defeated Webbers Falls 16-4 in the third game of the 3-way meeting on Tuesday.)

The Lady Dragons were scheduled to travel to Meeker on Thursday for a showdown with the Meeker Lady Bulldogs and are scheduled to host Wetumka and Graham-Dustin on Friday in a 3-way meeting.

In Monday’s first battle with Glencoe, the Lady Panthers tallied their lone run in the top of the second. Dewar began the scoring with three runs in the first, then made it a 6-1 contest with three runs in the home half of the second.

The Lady Dragons put the finishing touches on the 12-1 decision with a 6-run home half of the third and a scoreless top of fourth.

Gracie Johnson led the Dewar offensive attack in the runrule win, finishing 3 for 3 with a double, triple, home run – a solo blast in the first.

Other Lady Dragon batters with multiple hits in Monday’s 12-1 victory were Marti Yaerger (2 for 3, 2 home runs, 4 RBIs), Alyssa Baughman (2 for 2, single, double, RBI), Korbyn Anderson (2 for 2, 2 singles, 2 RBIs), and Raygin Thomas (2 for 2, 2 singles) with two hits apiece.

Yaerger’s two home runs came on back-to-back 2-run blasts in the second and third innings.

The final two base hits for Dewar in Monday’s opening win came on a single by Jaycie Berry and RBI triple by Bre Harvell.

In Monday’s nightcap against Glencoe, the visitors opened the scoring with three runs in the top of the first.

The Lady Dragons erupted for eight runs in the bottom of the inning for an 8-3 advantage, then tallied six runs in the last of the third for a 14-3 margin.

The Dewar defense kept the Lady Panthers off the scoreboard in the top of the fourth to put the finishing touches on the Lady Dragons’ 14-3 victory.

The Dewar offense was led by the duo of Bre Harvell (3 for 3, 2 singles, triple, 2 RBIs) and Kinsey Maldonado (3 for 3, single, 2 doubles, 2 RBIs) with three hits apiece.

Other Lady Dragon players with multi-hit games in the nightcap were Marti Yaerger (2 for 3, 2 singles, RBI), Brailee England (2 for 3, single, double, 2 RBIs), and Korbyn Anderson (2 for 3, 2 singles, RBI) with two hits each.

The final three hits for Dewar in Monday’s nightcap came on a single by Jaycie Berry and RBI singles by Gracie Johnson and Alyssa Baughman.

In Tuesday’s county battle with Okmulgee, the Lady Dragons began the scoring with 12 runs in the top of the first, then added six more in the second for the 18-0 decision.

Okmulgee’s lone base hit on Tuesday came on a leadoff single by Natori Yates in the bottom of the first.

The Lady Dragon offense was led by the trio of Marti Yaerger (3 for 3, single, double, home run, 4 RBIs), Alyssa Baughman (3 for 3, 2 singles, triple, 2 RBIs), and Brailee England (3 for 3, 3 singles, 2 RBIs) with three hits apiece. Yaerger’s roundtripper came on a 3-run blast in the second.

The quartet of Bre Harvell (2 for 3, single, triple, 4 RBIs), Kinsey Maldonado (2 for 2, single, home run, 4 RBIs), Raygin Thomas (2 for 3, 2 singles, RBI), and Jaycie Berry (2 for 2, 2 singles) also recorded multi-hit games against Okmulgee with two hits each. Maldonado’s home run came on a 3-run blast in the 12-run first.

The other base hits for Dewar in the county battle came on singles by Gracie Johnson, Cali Thomason, and Kyli Davis.

In Tuesday’s showdown with Webbers Falls, the Lady Dragons tallied five runs in the bottom of the first for an early 5-0 advantage.

The Dewar diamond squad put the game out reach in the home half of the second, erupting for 14 runs in the frame for a commanding 19-0 lead.

The Dewar defense retired the side in order in the top of the third for the 19-run, run-rule, victory.

The top four hitters in the Dewar lineup against Webbers Falls finished with perfect 3-for-3 hiting performances.

Leadoff hitter, Bre Harvell’s three hits came on three doubles and a pair of RBIs, while Marti Yaerger was a triple shy of hitting for the cycle in the run-rule victory, including blasting a 2-run home run in the 14-run second.

Gracie Johnson, the No. 3 hitter in the Dewar lineup, also just missed hitting for the cycle against Webbers Falls, reaching base on a single, double, and triple in the contest, while clean-up (No. 4) hitter Kinsey Maldonado’s three hits came on a pair of singles and a triple.
