Knight trio punches State wrestling ticket

Clark Hotema makes Dewar history at regional meet

The Henryetta Golden Knight varsity wrestling team will have three representatives at this weekend’s Oklahoma State Wrestling Championships at the Jim Norick State Fairgrounds Arena in Oklahoma City.

While Henryetta had three grapplers earn state tournament berths at last weekend’s regional tournament, two Dewar Dragon wrestlers made history at the event.

Freshman Clark Hotema recorded the first-ever regional tournament win for the Dragon mat squad with a first-round decision victory in the 175-pound weight division, while sophomore Cash Faulkner recorded the first-ever regional tournament pinfall victory in school history in the consolation first round of the 138-pound weight division.

The Knights will be represented at the state wrestling tournament by juniors Jason Powders, Tayler Hamric, and Jordyn Miller. Miller will be making his second-straight trip to State, while all three HHS grapplers will seek to become the first-ever individual state champion in school history this weekend.

The state wrestling tournament got underway Thursday with Wrestle-In matches, beginning at 9:30 a.m., and first-round matches, beginning at 11 a.m. The 3-day event will also feature matches on Friday and Saturday.

The three Henryetta state wrestling representatives punched their tickets to this weekend’s tournament with third-place finishes at last weekend’s Class 3A East Regional Wrestling Championships at Vinita High School. Powders became the first Knight grappler to secure a spot at State by capturing the bronze medal in the 157-pound weight division. Hamric was next on the state qualifying list for HHS with a third-place finish in the 175-pound weight division, while Miller secured his second-straight state tournament appearance by earning a bronze medal in the 215-pound weight division.

With the three 3rd-place finishes, the Knights were able to finish 10th overall in the team standings with 81 total team points.

The Blackwell Maroons took home the Class 3A East regional championship with a total of 338 team points, followed by the Salina Wildcats in second with 236.5 team points.

The rest of the Top 5 team finishers were Sperry in third with 196.5 points, Pawhuska in fourth with 196 points, and Vinita in fifth with 150.5 points.

The Dewar Dragons were the next Okmulgee County grappling squad to earn points at the 2-day event, finishing 19th overall with 23 team points.

The Okmulgee Bulldogs were 25th overall with eight team points, followed by the Morris Eagles in 27th with four points and the Wilson Tigers in 28th with three points.

At last weekend’s regional tournament in Vinita, the three Henryetta state qualifiers had their automatic state bids derailed by semifinal losses, then punched their ticket to State with wins in their respective consolation semifinal matches.
