“If I have told you earthly things and you do not believe, how can you believe if I tell you heavenly things?” John 3:12 To set the stage, today’s words are contained in the conversation between Nicodemus and Jesus. Ol’ Nic was a Pharisee, one who followed the Mosaic Law and who believed there was life beyond death. It’s interesting to note, also, that he sought out Jesus, something that may have easily put him on the outs with the rest of the Jewish leaders. He recognized Jesus’ teaching and miracles as originating from God, but that’s as far as his faith took him. He was led more by what he could see, touch, and experience for himself than by his spirit.
