Dewar sweeps Webbers Falls at home
By LARRY OWEN SPORTS EDITOR

The Dewar varsity basketball program treated their hometown fans to a pair of double-digit victories this past Saturday afternoon.

Despite frigid temperatures outside, the Dewar basketball fans were nice and toasty inside the Clell W. Henson Fieldhouse due to the hot shooting of the Dragon and Lady Dragon athletes.

The Lady Dragons improved to 8-4 on the year and snapped a 3-game losing streak in Saturday’s opening contest, defeating the visiting Webbers Falls Lady Warriors by a 57-29 margin, while the Dragons improved to 9-3 on the season with a 5943 victory in the nightcap.

The Dewar squads were scheduled to host Mounds on Tuesday and are scheduled to begin competition at the Paden Tournament on Thursday. Thursday’s opening-round action at Paden will see the Dragons battle Carney at 5:40 p.m., while the Lady Dragons are scheduled to take on Mason at 7 p.m.

In Saturday’s girls contest, the Lady Dragons came out of the opening frame with a 14-5 advantage, then took a 34-10 lead into the halftime break after outscoring the visiting Lady Warriors by a 20-5 margin in the second period.

The Dewar ladies escaped the third quarter with a narrow 14-13 advantage to take a commanding 48-23 lead into the final eight minutes of regulation, where the Lady Dragons put the finishing touches on the decisive 57-29 victory with a 9-6 margin.

Tajaya Lewis was the top offensive producer for the host Dewar squad, finishing with a game-high 17 points. Bre Harvell also found her way into double-digit scoring in the home contest with an 11-point output. The remaining Lady Dragon scoring featured Lay-Lay Carter and Mariah Carter with eight points each, Raygin Thomas and Laynie Taylor four apiece, Marti Yaerger three, and Cali Thomason two.

In Saturday’s boys game, the visitors took the opening period by a narrow 8-7 margin. The host Dragons caught fire offensively in the second quarter, outscoring Webbers Falls by a 17-6 margin to go into the intermission with a 10-point advantage, 24-14.

The Dewar gentlemen escaped the second half with a pair of 3-point margins – 13-10 and 22-19, respectively, to walk off their home gym floor with the 59-43 decision.

The top offensive performer for the Dragons on Saturday was Skelly Taylor, who finished with a game-high 24 points. Other double-digit scorers for Dewar in the home win were Stoney Yaerger with 15 and Seth Hudson with 10.
