Lady Tigers need OT in narrow win over Lady Dragons
The varsity basketball programs from Dewar and Wilson (Henryetta) squared off against one another Tuesday evening at the Tiger Den at Wilson High School.
The host Tigers and Lady Tigers walked away with the 2-game sweep against their Okmulgee County foes with the girls contest needing an extra four minutes before a winner was determined.
The host Wilson ladies held off a talented Lady Dragon squad in the overtime clash, walking off their home floor with the narrow 50-46 decision to improve to 9-3 on the year, while the Dewar ladies dropped to 7-4 on the season.
The host Tigers, who entered the county showdown with a spotless record and ranked 11th in Class B, improved to 12-0 on the campaign in the nightcap, defeating the visiting Dragons, who fell to 8-3, by a 60-28 decision.
The county cage programs were scheduled to return to action this week with Wilson traveling to Midway on Friday and Dewar hosting Webbers Falls on Saturday. Dewar is also scheduled to be at home January 16 against Mounds.
In Tuesday’s girls game at Wilson, the Lady Dragons came out of the opening frame with a 12-9 advantage. The host Lady Tigers put up an identical 12-9 margin in the second quarter to send the county battle to the halftime break with the score deadlocked 21-21. Both teams tallied nine points in the third period for a 30-30 tie with eight minutes remaining in regulation.
Wilson held a 3-point lead – 43-40 – late in the fourth quarter, then Dewar’s Tajaya Lewis drained game-tying 3-point basket with 11 seconds remaining in the stanza to force overtime with the score knotted at 43-43 at the end of regulation.
In the overtime period, the Lady Tigers scored the first six points in the frame for a 49-43 advantage. Dewar’s lone basket in the extra period came on a 3-point basket by Lewis with 13 seconds left to make it a 49-46 contest. Wilson’s Jaslene Proctor made one of two charity tosses with five seconds remaining to put the finishing touches on the Lady Tigers’ thrilling 50-46, overtime, victory.
Janelle Proctor led the Lady Tigers offensively in the win, finishing with a game-high 21 points. Brooklyn Weeks also recorded double-digit scoring in the county battle for Wilson with an 11-point performance. Jamie Proctor was next in the scoring column for the Lady Tigers with six, followed by Jayda Pinkston five, Jaslene Proctor three, and Reese Herring and Kaylee Earhart two apiece.
Lewis was tops in scoring for Dewar with 17, followed by Marti Yaerger with 13 and Lay-Lay Carter 11. Bre Harvell and Mariah Carter rounded out the Lady Dragon scoring on Tuesday with three and two, respectively.
In Tuesday’s boys county battle, the Tigers led 14-6 after one and 29-13 at halftime. The host Wilson squad outscored their county foes by margins of 16-10 and 15-5, respectively, in the second half to complete the 60-28 victory.
The Tigers were led by Zabrien Shelburn with a game-high 18 points and was joined in double figures by Zion Shelburn and Charles Shelburn, who both finished with 13 points in the home win. Other Wilson scorers on Tuesday were Keshon Shelburn with eight, Esiah King four, Aiden Barnard three, and Andrew Wilson one.
Dewar’s top scorer in the county battle was Jeron Brison with nine points. Other Dragon scorers on Tuesday were Stoney Yaerger with five, Seth Hud- Girls Game
