OSSAA announces new football district alignment for 2024, 2025 seasons
With the 2023 high school football season in the rearview, it is now time to release the new district alignments for the next two years in the state of Oklahoma.
The new alignments were voted on and approved by the Oklahoma Secondary Schools Activities Association.
Beginning with the 2024 season, Classes 2A-B will feature two 4-district divisions, something similar to the two 2-district divisions that Class 6A has incorporated for the past 10 years.
In 2023, there were a total of four new state champions crowned, beginning in 6A-II with Muskogee dethroning 2022 state champion Stillwater by a 28-26 margin in this year’s state title, earning the Roughers their first Gold Ball in 37 years.
Other new state champions in 2023 were Blanchard, who dethroned powerhouse Wagoner with a 19-14 victory in the 4A title contest, Lincoln Christian, who defeated 2022 state champion Heritage Hall by a 48-28 margin in the Class 3A title game, and Seiling, who took over the top spot in Class B from Laverne with a 48-16 rout of Velma-Alma in this year’s state title game.
The schools that defended their 2022 state championships in 2023 were Bixby in 6A-I (defeated Jenks 49-21), Carl Albert in 5A (defeated Del City 35-14), Washington in 2A (defeated MIllwood 41-24), Fairview in A (defeated Hooker 34-8), and Tipton in C (defeated Ryan 42-6).
With the new realignment, there will be a total of 12 state championships awarded across eight classes and will guarantee a new state champion in Class 3A in 2024, as Lincoln Christian is moving to Class 4A for the next two seasons. The 2023 Class 3A state runner-up – Heritage Hall – will also be moving up one class in 2024.
The new alignments will also see Class B state champion Seiling become part of the newly designed B-II division; Class A state champion Fairview become part of the newly designed A-I division, and Class 2A state champion Washington become part of the newly designed 2A-I division.
As far as the six varsity football teams in Okmulgee County, the only major change with the new realignments will see the Wilson Tigers move up one class from Class C to Class B for at least the next two years.
The Tigers, who captured their first district championship and also earned their first-ever playoff win in school history in 2023, will be part of District 4 in the newly designed Class B-II division and will be joined by current Class B schools Arkoma, Cave Springs, Gans, Keota, and Webbers Falls.
The Dewar Dragons, who will enter 2024 with a 54-game regular-season winning streak, will remain in Class B and will be part of District 3 in the newly designed Class B-I division and will be joined by Barnsdall, Foyil, Garber, Porum, and Yale.
The other four county gridiron squads, who competed in Class 2A the past two seasons, will remain in 2A with the new realignment.
The Beggs Golden Demons and Henryetta Golden Knights will become part of District 3 in the newly designed Class 2A-I division and will be joined by Chandler, Inola, Prague, Tahlequah Sequoyah, Sperry, and Westville.
The Okmulgee Bulldogs will also be part of the newly designed Class 2A-I division and will compete in District 4, along with Cascia Hall, Tulsa Webster, Heavener, Hugo, Idabel, Roland, and Victory Christian.
The Morris Eagles will be part of the newly designed Class 2A-II division and will compete in District 4, along with Atoka, Antlers, Keys, Spiro, Valliant, Vian, and Wilburton.
