Lady Tigers thump Webbers Falls for third place

The boys team championship at the 2023 Wilson Tiger Classic is staying put at Wilson (Henryetta) High School following the host Wilson Tigers’ thrilling 50-49 victory Saturday evening over Summit Christian in the boys title contest.

The Wilson Lady Tigers took home the girls third-place team plaque on Saturday following their 48-29 win over the Webbers Falls Lady Warriors.

The Tigers advanced to Saturday’s championship game following an 8253 thrashing of the Weleetka Outlaws in last Thursday’s winner’s bracket semifinal contest, while the Lady Tigers suffered their first loss of the season last Thursday in the girls winner’s bracket semifinals, falling in overtime by a 40-35 margin to the Weleetka Lady Outlaws.

The Wilson cage squads remained at home this week with three tough home contests, beginning Monday in a rematch with Weleetka. The other two opponents for this week’s 3-game homestand were the Schulter Bulldogs and Lady Bulldogs on Tuesday and the Mason Eagles and Lady Eagles on Friday.

In last Thursday’s girls winner’s bracket semifinal meeting with Weleetka, the Lady Tigers led by a narrow 10-9 margin after the first eight minutes of action, while Weleetka took the second stanza by an identical 10-9 advantage to deadlock the score at halftime, 19-19.

The Wilson ladies outscored their foes 10-4 in the third quarter for a 2923 lead, heading into the final frame of regulation, while the Lady Outlaws overcame the 6-point deficit by outscoring the host Lady Tigers 11-5 in the fourth quarter, forcing a 4-minute overtime period with the score knotted at 34-34.

The Wilson squad was unable to get its offense going in the overtime period, being outscored 6-1 in the 4-minute frame to suffer the 40-35 defeat.

Janelle Proctor was the top offensive performer for the Lady Tigers last Thursday, finishing with a team-best 17 points. Brooklyn Weeks just missed double figures with nine, followed by Kaozong Yang with six, Jamie Proctor two, and Jaslene Proctor one.

In Saturday’s girls third-place game, the Lady Tigers trailed 12-6 after one quarter of action, then countered with a 12-6 advantage in the second period for an 18-18 tie at halftime. The Wilson squad came out of the third stanza with a 14-9 margin to go into the final frame with a 32-27 lead, where the Lady Tigers completed the second-half comeback with a 16-2 advantage for the 48-29 victory and the third-place plaque.

Wilson’s Janelle Proctor led all scorers in Saturday’s win with a game-high 19 points. Jaslene Proctor was next in the Lady Tiger scoring column with 11 points. Other Wilson scorers against Webbers Falls were Brooklyn Weeks with eight, Jamie Proctor four, Kaozong three, and Ty Williams and Jayda Pinkston two each.

In last Thursday’s boys semifinal contest, the host Tigers came out of the opening frame with a 2312 advantage and went into halftime in front by 24 points – 44-20 – after outscoring the Outlaws by a 21-8 margin in the second quarter. The Wilson squad took the final two periods 21-17 and 17-16, respectively, to put the finishing touches on the convincing 82-53 decision.

Zabrien Shelburn was the leading scorer for the Tigers last Thursday, finishing with a team-best 18 points. Zion Shelburn was next offensively for Wilson with 17, folowed by Andrew Wilson with 13 and Keshon Shelburn with 11. In Saturday’s boys title contest, both teams tallied 14 points in the first eight minutes of action, then Summit Christian came out of the second stanza with a slim 11-8 advantage to lead by three at the halftime break, 25-22.

The Eagles doubled their lead to six, 42-36, heading into the final frame after outscoring the Wilson squad 17-14 in a high-scoring third quarter.

The Tigers overcame the 6-point deficit in the final period, outscoring their foes 14-7 to walk away with the narrow 50-49 victory and the boys team tournment championship.
