As a 6th grade student in Alva, our classrooms for Horace Mann Elementary were located in a building on the campus of Northwestern State Teacher’s College (of course, now it is Northwestern Oklahoma State University). As such, we were given access to the college gym. I remember a sign posted in the gym that said, “When that great scorer comes, and writes against your name. It isn’t that you won or lost, but how you played the game.”
