Tigers to meet No. 3 Ryan in Class C quarterfinals

Last Friday, the Wilson Tiger varsity football program defeated Paoli by a 60-38 margin to earn their first-ever playoff victory in school history.

This Friday, the Tigers will look to continue their journey through the Class C state football playoffs with a quarterfinal showdown with the third-ranked Ryan Cowboys at the Tiger Den at Wilson High School.

Both teams enter Friday’s quarterfinal battle with identical 10-1 records.

Ryan finished 9-1 in the regular season and 6-1 in District C-2. The lone season loss for the Cowboys in 2023 came in Week 5 at home against top-ranked Tipton, suffering a 40-32 setback to the defending Class C state champions.

Ryan began its 2023 campaign September 1 with a 50-22 victory over Thackerville, then finished non-district play with a 32-14 win over Wilson (Ardmore) and 50-0 victory over Central High, out of Marlow.

The Cowboys opened district play September 22 on the road, defeating Mt. View-Gotebo by a 52-6 margin.

After the 8-point loss to Tipton on September 29, the Ryan gridiron squad got back in the win column on October 5, defeating Corn Bible by a 44-28 margin to improve to 2-1 in district play.

The Cowboys concluded their district action with wins over Geary (50-0), Temple (54-8), Grandfield (420), and Bray-Doyle (656), respectively.

The 6-1 district record earned Ryan the No. 2 spot in the C-2 standings and a first-round home playoff game last Friday.

The Cowboys’ opponent in their postseason opener was the Tyrone Bobcats, who finished third overall in the District C-1 standings. Ryan came out of the first-round battle with Tyrone with a 42-28 decision to advance to this Friday’s quarterfinal meeting with the Wilson Tigers.

Friday’s quarterfinal matchup between Wilson and Ryan is scheduled to take place at 7 p.m. at the Tiger Den with the winner advancing to next week’s semifinal round at a site to be determined by the Oklahoma Secondary Schools Activities Association against the winner of Friday’s quarterfinal showdown between Timberlake and Coyle in Timberlake.

Other quarerfinal action in Class C on Friday will see top-ranked and defending champion Tipton host Graham-Dustin and Thackerville host 2023 state runner-up Waynoka.
