Regent Prep next on Dragons’ state title radar

The Dewar Dragon varsity football program earned its seventh-straight opening-round playoff win last Friday with a 68-8 dismantling of the Cave Springs Hornets.

The next obstacle on the 2020 Class B state champions’ journey towards another state title is the Regent Prep Rams, who are scheduled to come to historic Dr. Ted Lewis Stadium in Dewar for a second- round meeting with the host Dragon gridiron squad.

Dewar enters Friday’s second-round contest with a spotless 11-0 record and has won 10 of its 11 games this season by the 45-point Mercy Rule.

Regent Prep comes into the postseason battle with a 9-1 season record, advancing to Friday’s second-round meeting with a 51-6 victory at home against the Depew Hornets.

The Rams finished 8-1 during the regular season – 4-1 in district play – and finishing second in the District B-7 standings behind Drumright, who defeated the Tulsa school by a 32-27 margin on October 6 in Drumright.

The 5-point Week 6 setback to the Tornados was the only loss in the regular season for Regent Prep in 2023.

Regent Prep began the 2023 season August 25 with a 64-40 road win at Weleetka, then earned non-district wins over Davenport (46-0), Wetumka (55-48), and Summit Christian (55-6).

After the district-opening loss at Drumright, the Rams won their final four district wins by the 45-point Mercy Rule in each contest, beginning with a 61-14 home win over Barnsdall on October 12. The other District B-7 wins for Regent Prep this season came against Yale (76-30), Olive (50-0), and Pioneer-Pleasant Vale (52-6), respectively.

Friday’s second-round matchup between the Dragons and the Rams is scheduled to get underway at 7 p.m. at Dr. Ted Lewis Stadium in Dewar with the winner advancing to next week’s Class B quarterfinal round at a site to be determined by the Oklahoma Secondary Schools Activities Association against the winner of Friday’s second-round meeting between Oklahoma Bible Academy and Southwest Covenant.

Other Class B second-round playoff games on Friday will see defending state champion Laverne host Okeene, Keota host Yale, Velma-Alma host Garber, Drumright host Caddo, Weleetka host Webbers Falls, and 2023 state runner-up Seiling host Turpin.
