Dewar to host Velma-Alma in ‘Battle of Unbeatens’ Friday
By LARRY OWEN SPORTS EDITOR

Beggs, Wilson seek to remain perfect in district play in Week 5

The midway point of the 2023 high school football regular-season schedule is taking place this Thursday and Friday all across the state of Oklahoma.

For five of the six Okmulgee County varsity football programs will continue their journey through district play, while the sixth county gridiron squad will face its toughest challenge this season in a non-district contest in front of their hometown fans.

The highlight of the Week 5 schedule for county teams will be the non-district showdown Friday night at Dr. Ted Lewis Stadium in Dewar between the host Dewar Dragons and the Velma-Alma Comets in a clash of undefeated Class B teams.

Both squads enter the Week 5 showdown with identical 4-0 records. Dewar has recorded wins over Cherokee (52-6), Snyder (60-0), Depew (58-8), and Arkoma (52-0), respectively, this season, while Velma- Alma has earned consecutive wins over Destiny Christian (28-8), Hollis (56-6), Caddo (60-14), and Pioneer-Pleasant Vale (52-0).

Along with seeking to keep their perfect regular- season record intact, the Dragons will also look to extend their current regular-season win streak, which sits at 48 games.

While Dewar aims to remain perfect in 2023, two county teams will look to stay atop their respective district standings with wins on Friday night.

The Beggs Golden Demons and Wilson Tigers began district play last week with double-digit road wins with Beggs escaping with a 38-16 win over Westville in its District 2A-7 opener, while Wilson traveled to Coyle last Thursday and emerged with a 50-8 victory in its District C-3 opener.

The Demons will look for their second-straight district win Friday with a road battle with the Victory Christian Conquerors, who also began district play on the winning side last Friday with a 60-13 victory over Beggs’ county mates, the Okmulgee Bulldogs. Victory Christian comes into the Week 5 showdown with a 3-1 record with the lone loss coming September 8 by a 67-28 margin to Shiloh Christian, Arkansas. Besides last week’s win over Okmulgee, the Conquerors began the 2023 campaign with victories over Cascia Hall (33-21) and Henryetta (58-13), respectively.

The Tigers will seek their second-straight 2-0 district start in school history on Friday, hosting the Oaks-Mission Warriors.

The Warriors come into the Week 5 contest with a 1-3 season record and 0-1 in district play following a 21-14 loss to Wesleyan Christian last Friday. The lone win for Oaks-Mission came on August 25 against Gans, defeating the Grizzlies by a narrow 30-28 margin. Besides the loss to Wesleyan Christian, the Warriors’ other defeats this season have come against Porum (22-16) and Webbers Falls

(53-8), respectively.

The other three county teams in action this week will be searching for their first district win of 2023.

The Morris Eagles began District 2A-7 action last Friday at home against Kiefer, dropping the district opener to the Trojans by a 30-12 margin. The Eagles will look to earn their first district win of 2023 on Friday with a trip to Kansas High School and a showdown with the unbeaten Kansas Comets.

The Comets (4-0) began district play last Friday with a 26-14 win over the Sperry Pirates and have also recorded wins over Hulbert (65-7), Colcord

(27-20), and Fairland (48-7), respectively.

The Henryetta Golden Knights began District

2A-5 play last Friday with a 35-0 home loss to the Prague Red Devils. The Knights’ search for their first district win of 2023 continued on Thursday at Tahlequah Sequoyah in a district battle with the Tahlequah Sequoyah Indians.

The Indians entered the Week 5 contest with a

2-2 season record and 1-0 in district action, following their 50-8 victory over the Okemah Panthers. Besides the district-opening win over Okemah, the other win for Tahlequah Sequoyah this season came on September 14 with a 34-18 victory at home against the Westville Yellowjackets. Tahlequah Sequoyah began the 2023 season with back-to-back losses to Muldrow (38-14) and Eufaula (63-7), respectively.

The final county gridiron squad in action in Week 5 is the Okmulgee Bulldogs, who will host the Westville Yellowjackets in a battle of 0-4 teams. The Bulldogs began district play last Friday with the 60-13 loss to Victory Christian, while Westville fell to Beggs by a 38-16 margin in their district opener last Friday. Westville’s other losses this season have come against Gentry, Arkansas (47–

22), Lincoln, Arkansas (48-24), and Tahlequah Sequoyah (34-18), respectively. Kickoff for this week’s contests featuring Okmulgee County varsity football teams is scheduled for 7 p.m.
