The parable offered to us in the Gospel today is one of those examples where Jesus speaks to us a very powerful message but the translation dumbs it down and we really lose the meaning or the power of it. Jesus tells us that the king called before him his servant who, our translation tells us, owed him a “huge amount,” or a “large amount,” but Jesus doesn’t say a huge amount, he says he owes him ten thousand talents. Oh, like that’s really helpful. We’ll get to that in a second but that’s what he owes, ten thousand talents. Our gospel continues, “When that servant had left, he found one of his fellow servants who owed him,” in our translation at Mass, “a much smaller amount.” It doesn’t say that either, it says he is owed a hundred denarii. That helps us out a lot too.
