Dragons keep win streak alive with 58-8 victory

The Dewar Dragon varsity football team pushed their regular-season win streak to 47-straight games this past Friday night at Dr. Ted Lewis Field in Dewar.

The latest regular-season victory came by a 58-8 decision against the visiting Depew Hornets.

Friday’s win was the third-straight Mercy-Rule victory for the Dragons this season, which includes decisions over Cherokee (52-6) and Snyder (60-0), respectively.

The Dewar gridiron squad, who has not suffered a regular-season defeat since falling by a 50-38 margin to the Davenport Bulldogs on September 28, 2018, will look to keep their win streak going this Thursday night at Arkoma and a non-district showdown with the Arkoma Mustangs.

Friday’s non-district road meeting with Arkoma is scheduled to get underway at 7 p.m.

In Friday’s home win over Depew, the Dragons got the scoring started at the 8:44 mark of the opening quarter on a 10-yard pass from Peyton Kilhoffer to Christian Cargola. The try for two was unsuccessful, giving the host Dewar squad the early 6-0 advantage.

With 2:38 remaining in the first stanza, Nevin Corbin doubled the Dewar total to 12-0 with a 3-yard scamper, then Kilhoffer found Naea Corbin in the end zone for the conversion attempt to make it a 14-0 contest.

The final Dewar tally of the opening frame came on a 7-yard TD run by Nevin Corbin at the 1:15 mark. Tradyn Doty’s successful conversion run pushed the Dragon lead to 22-0 after the first 12 minutes of action.

The first Dewar score of the second quarter came at the 10:48 mark on a 38-yard scamper by Kilhoffer. Nevin Corbin crossed the goal line on the conversion run to extend the Dragon margin to 28-0.

A 29-yard TD run by Nevin Corbin with 6:43 left in the first half and a successful conversion run by Wesley Sanford made it a 36-0 Dewar lead, then Haiden Kaler’s 8-yard scamper at the 3:45 mark pushed the Dragon advantage to 42-0.

Depew broke up the shutout bid with a 16-yard run by Jack Johnson with 32 seconds remaining in the first half. Matthew Brown’s successful conversion run cut the Dewar lead to 42-8.

On the ensuing kickoff, Cash Faulkner returned the kick 77 yards to paydirt, while Doty bulldozed his way across the goal line for the conversion try to send the non-district contest into the halftime break with Dewar in complete control, 508.

The game ended on the 45-point mercy rule at the 10:38 mark of the third quarter on a 24-yard TD run by Kaler, giving the host Dragons the 58-8 victory and extend the regular-season win streak to 47 games.
