Martel’s 4- TDs guide Beggs to 48-0 season opening win

The Beggs Golden Demon varsity football team opened their 2023 campaign on a winning note this past Friday in front of their hometown fans at Tate Field at Golden Demon Stadium.

The first win of the 2023 season came in a non-district showdown with the visiting Hugo Buffaloes.

Beggs senior Red Martel was a dominating force on the offensive side of Friday’s season-opening win, scoring a total of 4 TDs in the Demons’ 48-0 victory over the visiting Buffaloes.

Three of Martel’s scores came in the first half – two on the ground and one through the air. The other score for the Kansas University commit came in the third stanza.

Martel and the Demons will look to double their win total this Friday when Beggs welcomes the Rejoice Christian Eagles to town for a non-district battle.

Friday’s non-district meeting between Beggs and Rejoice Christian is set for a 7 p.m. kickoff at Tate Field at Golden Demon Stadium in Beggs.

In Friday’s season opener against Hugo, the Demons began the scoring with a 53-yard run by Martel in the opening quarter. The pass attempt on the conversion try was no good, giving the host Beggs squad with an early 6-0 advantage.

Martel added a receiving touchdown to his scoring total later in the opening frame, hauling in a pass from quarterback Billy Ramsey and rocketing down the field 71 yards to paydirt. Ryan Grayson raced into the end zone for the successful conversion try to push the Beggs lead to 14-0 after the first 12 minutes of action.

The second-quarter scoring began with a 31-yard TD run by Martel, extending the Demons’ lead to 20-0.

The first-half scoring came to a close on a 45-yard TD pass from Ramsey to Jordan Wesley, sending the season opener to the halftime break with Beggs in complete control, 26-0.

The Demons made it a 32-0 contest in the third quarter on a 15-yard scamper by Ramsey, then Martel concluded his 4-score night later in the frame with a 16-yard gallop into the end zone. Jason Nethon’s successful conversion run following the Martel score pushed the Beggs lead to 40-0 with 12 minutes remaining in regulation.

A 45-yard TD run by Elijah Johnson and successful conversion run by Nethon in the fourth stanza brought the season-opening shutout win to a close, 48-0.
