Lady Eagles split recent district action
By LARRY OWEN SPORTS EDITOR

Morris squad currently sits 4th in District 3A-7

The Morris Lady Eagle varsity fastpitch softball team came away with a split decision in district action earlier this week.

The Lady Eagles began the week with a 9-0 victory over the Kellyville Lady Ponies Monday in Kellyville, then found themselves on the losing end of a 5-0 decision to the Chandler Lady Lions Tuesday in Morris.

With the recent district split, the Morris squad currently sits fourth in the District 3A-7 standings at 5-4 with Chandler (6-2), Sperry (6-3), and Prague (5-3) ahead of the Lady Eagles. Lincoln Christian is just behind Morris in the district standings with a 4-1 record, followed by Kellyville (1-5) and Beggs (0-9), respectively.

The Lady Eagles were back in action Thursday with a road trip to Vian and will also be on the road Tuesday with a trip to Prague. The Morris squad will close out next week’s schedule with three games at the Morris Softball Festival next Thursday.

In Monday’s shutout win over Kellyville, the Lady Eagles opened the scoring with three runs in the top of the second. The Morris squad completed the 9-0 victory with six runs in its half of the fifth and keeping the host Lady Ponies off the scoreboard in the bottom of the inning.

The Lady Eagle offensive output was led by the quartet of Kaydence Ausbrooks (2 for 4, 2 singles, 2 RBIs), Emma Duclos (2 for 4, single, double), Alli Guynes (2 for 3, 2 singles, RBI), and Ashlyn Clevenger (2 for 3, 2 singles, 2 RBIs) with two hits apiece.

The other two base hits for Morris against Kellyville came on a single by Camara Casey and an RBI single by Fire Clark.

Other Lady Eagle baserunners on Monday were Casey (2 walks), Briley Cagle (walk), Dezmond Lewis (walk), and Baylee Qualls (walk). Cagle drove in one of the six Morris runs in the fifth with an RBI sacrifice fly.

Duclos earned the pitching win for Morris, allowing four hits with two walks and nine strikeouts in five scoreless innings of work.

In Tuesday’s shutout loss to Chandler, the only baserunners for the Lady Eagles were Briley Cagle with a one-out single in the first and Kailyn Fixico on a hit by pitch with one out in the sixth.

Chandler broke a scoreless tie with a run in the top of the third, then added three in the fifth and one in the seventh for the 5-0 decision.

Emma Duclos was saddled with the pitching loss for Morris on Tuesday, giving up five runs on six hits with two walks in seven innings of work.
