Knights look to ‘conquer’ Victory Christian in tough Week 1 battle
By LARRY OWEN SPORTS EDITOR

Season opens for four county gridiron squads tonight

The 2023 high school football season will get underway for four Okmulgee County teams tonight, while the other two gridiron squads will face their second opponent of the campaign in Week 1.

The Henryetta Golden Knights, who scored a come-from-behind win last Friday in their season opener against Hartshorne, will face a very tough challenge in their second non-district game of 2023 when the Victory Christian Conquerors – a Class 2A semifinalist last year – come to historic Cameron Field for a Week 1 showdown. Victory Christian also enters tonight’s non-district contest with a 1-0 season record after the Conquerors notched a 33-21 win over the Cascia Hall Commandos.

The other county team that will take the field for the second time this season is the Okmulgee Bulldogs, who opened the 2023 campaign with an 18-0 loss to the Star Spencer Bobcats last Friday in Okmulgee. The Bulldogs will be on the road for their Week 1 contest, traveling to Antlers for a non-district meeting with the Antlers Bearcats, who will open the 2023 season tonight. While Okmulgee will enter tonight’s non-district battle with Antlers seeking its first win of 2023, the Bulldogs will also look to give new head coach Randy Jackson his first win as a head coach.

The four county teams that will begin their 2023 seasons tonight will be the Beggs Golden Demons, Morris Eagles, Dewar Dragons, and Wilson Tigers.

The Eagles will be the lone county team to open 2023 on the road, traveling to Kellyville for a non-district showdown with the Kellyville Ponies, who began their season last Friday with a 54-0 loss to the Hominy Bucks.

The Demons will kick off their 2023 campaign at Tate Field at Golden Demon Stadium in Beggs against the Hugo Buffaloes, who suffered an 1816 defeat to Dickson in their season opener last Friday.

The Dragons will begin their 2023 season tonight at the friendly confines of Dr. Ted Lewis Stadium in Dewar, welcoming the Cherokee Chiefs to town for a non-district battle. Cherokee enters tonight’s contest with a 1-0 record after shutting out Beaver 46-0 last Friday at home.

The Tigers will start their 2023 campaign tonight at home against the Graham-Dustin Chieftains, who began their season last Friday with a 56-0 victory over Life Christian Academy.

Kickoff for all Week 1 contests involving Okmulgee County gridiron squads will take place at 7 p.m.
